Today we were invited to Blackburn with Darwen Carers service for an event to celebrate Carers Week, to learn more about what it is to be a carer, help and support available and the local strategy for supporting carers. We met lovely people, listened to carers experiences and our team leader Jade chatted to a fabulous young man, attending the event with his mum. Kano has his own business making 3D prints. We had to have a picture! What a lovely way to spend a morning and we got fed. Thank you. We were inspired.

If you are a carer in Blackburn with Darwen and need help please contact this wonderful service for help and support or a chat.

My name is Sham, I have been volunteering at Shelter Lancashire in Front of House for over a year now. Shelter helps people with housing issues and benefits and debts. I meet and greet people and use my language skills to make people feel welcome. I also help with admin, fundraising and general office tasks. I am friendly, reliable and confident and am committed to supporting people in the community. In my role I have learnt to become more confident and doing tasks more independently which is an achievement for me to come this far. I am encouraged to wear my sunflower lanyard to start conversations about hidden disabilities and volunteering to show what people can achieve with confidence, determination and a willingness to try new things. If you are in the library and see me, I am happy to have a chat.
Volunteering is vital because it gives me more experience and has increased my skills and my confidence. This has given me an excellent understanding and developed the knowledge around Shelter and issues that the local community are facing. I love being part of the team that helps them.

I am Sabina. Until this week I was a volunteer with Shelter Lancashire. I leave for a new employment opportunity. I joined Shelter Lancashire as a volunteer 18 months ago. With previous admin experience I was looking to return to work following a career break looking after my sons. I learnt about the volunteering opportunity while using the local library where Shelter Lancashire is based. I thought it would be a great place to build my confidence and gain some experience. Shelter does such a rewarding job in supporting the community with housing, benefit and debt issues. I have helped with workshops, represented Shelter at community events, supported admin activities. Volunteering gave me a sense of purpose, the most memorable moment of my volunteering so far? Everything!! I always felt welcomed and part of the team.

Congratulations and the best of luck Sabina, you will be missed.

"When I saw that letter and saw 'intentionally homeless' and that I was not acting in good faith - to me, that was a punch in the face".

A safe, secure home can change everything.

For Georgia and her son, it meant finally having stability after months in temporary accommodation. A place to feel safe. A place to rebuild.

But right now, too many children are still growing up without that foundation.

We know what works. Social homes give families the chance to thrive.

Let’s make that possible for everyone.
