Well, what a great weekend we’ve had here at Binchester!

Thanks to everyone who took part and visited us.

We’re going for a rest tomorrow, but will be back to our opening Wednesday-Sunday from the 2nd September.

Our archaeology is still here waiting for you to be impressed!

We also do school visits, where children can learn all about the Romans and archaeology, for all age groups. If you are or know a teacher - point them our way!

Binchester Roman Fort is now dog-friendly 🐕🐶🐾🏛️🏺

We’ve listened to visitor feedback and have reviewed the dog policy we inherited from Binchester’s previous operator.

And we’ve decided to trial welcoming well-behaved dogs (on short leads) to visit the outdoor parts and bathhouse structures of our site.

We’re now open 7 days a week!

Until September, Monday and Tuesday join Wednesday to Sunday as days when you can visit Binchester!

Luna - the Roman goddess of the moon 🌒 after whom Monday is named (dias Lunae in Latin) will join the other gods/goddesses who give their names to the days of the week;
Tuesday: named after the god of war - Tiw to the Germanic Anglo-Saxons, but Mars to the Romans (dias Martis)
Wednesday: Woden’s day to the Anglo-Saxons, Mercury’s day to the Romans (dias Mercurii)
Thursday: Thor’s day or Jupiter’s day (dias Iovis)
Friday: Frig’s day or Venus’ day (dias Veneris)

And two other Roman gods:
🪐 Saturn’s day (Saturday)
🌞 Sol’s day (the god of the Sun, and Luna’s brother)

We’re sure Luna is pleased to be joining Sol as representing an open day for Binchester!

We’re really excited to be welcoming potential volunteers to an open day at Binchester tomorrow (Sat 18th) and on Wednesday 22nd

If you’re interested in possibly volunteering here, come down and hear about the roles we have, and get a free introductory tour of the site

We have great opportunities from being a welcoming face for our visitors 👋 to maintaining the grounds of this incredible archaeology site 🏰🌱🪏🔨
