The council's leader, Dan Harrison, has welcomed the news that the Government will look again at its local government reorganisation decision.

Today (Monday), the Government announced it will pause and review its plans for 14 areas across England, including Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

In July, the Government decided to create two new local councils by April 2028, one covering a larger city and another for the rest of Leicestershire and Rutland.

Dan Harrison said: โ€œThis is welcome news.

โ€œThe Governmentโ€™s flawed plan to expand Leicester risks swallowing up dozens of towns and villages and we are clear that residents do not want it.

โ€œThatโ€™s why I announced last week that I wanted to seek urgent clarification from the Secretary of State. Iโ€™m pleased the Government has heard our call.

โ€œWe stand firmly with our residents. I look forward to hearing more but let me be clear - we wonโ€™t be backing down.โ€
