Welcome ot the world, Freya 💜

Mum Kirstie welcomed baby Freya last month and wanted to thank the team at BWH who supported her throughout her time in hospital.

Kirstie shared: “Every single midwife was incredibly supportive, kind and patient during my induction. The time I spent in the hospital couldn't have been better because of all the staff who looked after me and my baby.

“It was an emotional experience but came with so much joy.

“A special thank you to Melissa, Abby and Shelter on the Rosa Team for the massive support and kindness you have given me and Freya.”

This month is Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month, but did you know that 49% of people* struggle to name a single gynaecological cancer?

Our hospital supports thousands of women with gynaecological conditions, including cancers. An MRI scan can help provide an accurate diagnosis at a time when patients need information as quickly as possible.

Currently, our patients are sent to another, unfamiliar hospital or site to have an MRI scan, because we don't have one at our hospital. This can add extra anxiety and stress on our patients at what is already a worrying time. This needs to change.

That's why we've launched our £1.5m MRI Appeal to help bring a state of the art MRI scanner to our hospital for the women and families who need it most.

More work is needed to raise awareness of conditions like gynaecological cancers. Demand for MRIs is growing and we expect to provide 1,000 gynaecology MRIs every year.

Introducing the very deserving finalists of our 'Brighter Futures' award at this year's BWC Spirit Awards ✨

- Senior Community Family Support Workers - Established in 2023, the team created and developed a pioneering service supporting families facing complex challenges, including domestic abuse, poor mental health, homelessness, deprivation, substance misuse, asylum seeking, disability and social care involvement.

- Dr Chris Bird and Dr Francis Dutton - Sparkbrook Children's Zone, Consultant Paediatrician & GP - Since 2021, they have worked tirelessly to tackle health inequalities affecting children, young people and families in Sparkbrook, Sparkhill and Balsall Heath.

- Aspire/Widening Participation Team - Universal Family Programme - Since 2022, the team has engaged with 259 care leavers, with 121 progressing into employment, apprenticeships, training, placements or career development opportunities.

Baby Jaxson has graduated from the baby clinic 💜

Mum Chloe welcomed her rainbow baby Jaxson on Christmas Eve last year, and Jaxson then spent time in our NICU due to Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn (PPHN), a serious medical condition where a baby’s circulatory system fails to adapt to breathing outside the womb.

Chloe said: “I wanted to say the biggest thank you to your rainbow clinic and NICU. Jaxson was born on Christmas Eve after we lost our little girl at 28 weeks the year before. He spent over a month in NICU. The care he received was exceptional. It was so scary seeing our full-term baby ventilated, but they made it so calm and 'normal' and the nurses became like family.

"Jaxson is now a thriving 8-month-old who was just discharged from the Baby Clinic by the same consultant who saved him.”

Please note, the below features content regarding pregnancy and baby loss.

This year, Baby Loss Awareness Week runs from Wednesday 9 to Tuesday 15 October and is a special opportunity to remember our much-loved and missed babies gone too soon and raise awareness of pregnancy and baby loss. It’s an incredibly important week at our hospital and is a time for bereaved parents, families and friends to come together and honour the precious lives that have been lost.

Join us in this time of remembrance by purchasing our special charity wax melts or candle, symbolising the light that these precious babies brought into our lives. Light your candle at 7pm on Tuesday 15 October as we come together with families across the country for the globally recognised Wave of Light commemorations. 🕯️

Together, we can create a Wave of Light that flows around the world. 💜

Did you know...? ✨

🏥 Approximately 1,300 patients at our hospital will need an MRI scan as part of their diagnosis and treatment.

🏥 Around 60% will wait longer than six weeks for their scan.

🏥 By not having a scanner at the Women’s Hospital, patients currently need to travel to the next closest hospital with an available appointment, which can often be over an hour away.

🏥 Women and families face extra stress and potential financial costs at a time when they may already be feeling vulnerable.

We think our patients deserve better and we hope you can help. 💜

“From the moment I arrived at the hospital, I was made to feel completely at ease. I genuinely couldn’t have wished for anything more.” 💜

Mum Alicia welcomed her son Otto earlier this year and as a carrier of Group B Strep (GBS), she knew she would have to go into hospital as soon as her labour started.

She said: “Although I knew from the beginning that I wouldn’t be able to have the water birth I had planned, it didn’t matter in the end as I felt comfortable birthing whichever way came naturally. My gorgeous midwife, Maud, never left my side, and honestly, I don’t think I would have managed as well as I did without her.

"I can’t thank the amazing team of midwives, student midwives, surgeons, anaesthetists and HCAs enough."
