A joke about cockroaches has grown into a wave of challenge to Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in its twelfth year in power. In the context of rising living costs and anger of corruption in medical school entrance exams, hundreds of thousands of young people took to the streets in several main cities. Despite facing tear gas, baton charges and mobile internet shutdowns within weeks protests forced the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Events like this, as well as other recent waves of mass anger in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Nepal have given small glimpses of what youth and working-class action can achieve. The question now is how these movements can be turned into something lasting? How can we build independent organisations of the working class with a socialist programme, fighting not just for one minister’s resignation, but for a society run in the interests of the many who build it, not the few who own it?

Whether buying or renting, having a roof over our heads is becoming increasingly unaffordable. Housing costs in Britain have risen by an eye-watering 41% over the last five years and renters are giving an average of 36.1% of their earnings to their landlord each month. This crisis hits young people particularly hard, with 18 to 25-year-olds spending half their income on rent. It’s therefore no surprise that homelessness figures have hit a record high.

The capitalist politicians try to blame migrants and refugees for the housing crisis, yet only 2% of social housing is going to refugees. Meanwhile, the government is doing next to nothing to build new council houses. What’s more, there are over 300,000 empty houses across the country that could be used to home people now!

Join us this Monday to discuss how we can fight for a socialist world, where decent housing isn’t a luxury but a basic human right.

We were out today in Birmingham City Centre, collecting signatures for a £15 minimum wage without exemptions.

As prices rise, many of us are increasingly struggling to make our wages stretch to the end of the month, but it doesn’t have to be like this. The money is there to pay workers a fair wage. In 2020, the richest 1% in Britain had an average wealth of over £4 million. The wealth of Britain’s 157 billionaires now equals 22% of the country’s GDP! Imagine how that money could improve the lives of working-class people.

That’s why the Socialist Party calls for a trade union struggle for the immediate implementation of a £15 an hour minimum wage as a step towards a real living wage without exemptions. We also say that the minimum wage should automatically increase linked to average earnings or inflation, whichever is greater.

Growing up today means growing up in permanent crisis. Wars spreading across across the world, with governments pouring billions into arms while services are gutted.

The Climate crisis is accelerating: Rent. debt and the cost of living are crushing our low wages. And for those leaving school or college, the "opportunity" on offer is a future of debt. Tuition fees are climbing again, maintenance loans don't even cover rent. and universities are run like businesses squeezing students for profit. On top of that. we have a jobs market of zero-hours contracts and insecurity instead of a future.

To win a real future, young people have to get organised for a socialist alternative to capitalism - a system where society's wealth, resources and technology are used to meet the needs of all and not just a few.

That means building a movement to take wealth and resources out the hands of the super-rich. Come to our next meeting to find out more about how you can get involved!

This week Socialist Party members have been out around the city centre campaigning for a £15 an hour minimum wage. People in Birmingham agree that the cost of living is going up, so wages need to go up too!

But increasing wages can only help workers for so long. To end the constant squeeze on living standards, we need to nationalise the commanding heights of the economy, including water, mail, rail, and the banks! We need rent controls and a program of mass council house building.

Unfortunately, despite the popularity of these ideas, no one in parliament is fighting for it. That's why we need a new party of and for the working class. As the biggest groups of the organised working class, the trade unions should be the ones to lead the formation of this new party!

Socialists from every continent contributed reports from their areas and analyses of their countries' situations. It was a week of important discussion on China, Israel/Palestine, Marxist theory, global youth movements and much more.

Burnham’s announcements last week to cut VAT on energy and decrease the cost of bus fares might sound good on paper, but it’s not enough to fill the financial gap faced by workers. The money saved on energy VAT won't even offset the upcoming increase in price cap!

The only real way to tackle the growing inequality in people’s finances is to pay us more!

On Saturday we were talking to local people about the need for a £15 an hour minimum wage as soon as possible, and the need for socialist change to end equality for good.
