A: For something to be considered a trivial benefit, it must meet the following conditions:

- the benefit isn't cash or a cash voucher
- the cost of the benefit doesn't exceed £50
- the benefit isn't provided as part of any contractual obligation (including under salary sacrifice arrangements)
- the benefit isn't provided in recognition of services performed, or anticipated to be performed, by the employee.

When providing a benefit such as a health cash plan, it will be a contractual arrangement offered to all employees on an ongoing basis. Because of the contractual obligation, it will not meet the trivial benefit criteria.

A: Awarding a new office chair to an employee will be treated as a taxable benefit.

The value of the benefit will be the higher of how much the chair is worth second-hand when you transfer it or how much it cost when you bought it.

The taxable value of the benefit must be reported on form P11D under section A or payrolled (if registered for voluntary payrolling benefits).

The employer pays Class 1A National Insurance on the value of the benefit.
