🏉 Match Day with a Mission – Saints Fans, Let’s Smash Hunger! 🥫

This Thursday evening, 11th June ,as St.Helens RLFC take on Warrington Wolves , we’re calling on the Saints faithful to bring the same passion off the pitch as the lads bring on it.

📍 From 6:00pm outside the BrewDog Stadium , we’ll be collecting food for the Hope Centre St Helens Foodbank — This time we will be in a white van so kindly provided by PSD Vehicle Rental whilst ours is unfortunately still in the garage.

🧡 Over 90% of the food the foodbank gives out comes directly from people like you. Your donation could mean a child in our town doesn’t go to bed hungry tonight.

❤️ Families across St Helens are struggling. Your kindness could be the difference between a neighbour eating tonight… or going without.

👉 Heading to the game? Bring a can. Bring two.
Tinned meals, pasta, cereal — every single item genuinely matters. When we come together, we change lives.

🙏 On Friday 1st May, you donated an incredible 82kg of food — that generosity made a real impact. Let’s go even bigger this Thursday!

💡 Can’t donate at the match? You can still help by dropping food at any of these local points:

📍 Tesco Extra, St Helens Linkway
📍 Asda, Kirkland Street
📍 Dentons Green Post Office, Greenfield Rd
📍 Hope Centre, Atherton St
📍 Sainsbury’s, Eccleston
📍 Newton Family & Community Centre
📍 Any St Helens Library (check council site for opening hours)

This is what being part of the Saints family is all about.
Bring a can. Lift a spirit. Cheer the team. Change a life.

St Helens Green Party is absolutely dismayed to have read the words of Council Leader Cllr George Woodward yesterday evening.

We want to make something absolutely clear: we stand in solidarity with LGBTQIA+ communities here in St Helens and around the world. We always have, and we always will.

The hateful and divisive rhetoric used in his statement shows exactly how far this Reform led council is willing to go. Rather than bringing people together, they are choosing to stir up culture wars, target marginalised communities, and create division across our town.

They claim to care about children, but Reform's actions tell a very different story.

Caring about children means supporting families in poverty. It means protecting access to education for SEND children. It means making sure young people can access safe, age-appropriate information, support and guidance when they need it. It does not mean discouraging libraries from offering educational materials or activities. It does not mean trying to defund support for some of the most vulnerable children in our communities. It certainly does not mean minimising marginalised communities within St Helens and using immigration as a scapegoat to avoid tackling the real issues that actually affect children across the borough daily.

Our town faces real challenges: poverty, inequality, underfunded services, stretched schools, housing pressures, and families being pushed to breaking point. Reform would rather distract from those problems by turning neighbour against neighbour.

First they came for refugees, asylum seekers and migrants. Now they are coming for Pride and our LGBTQIA+ friends, neighbours and family members.

What next? Or should we say who next?

A council leader is more than entitled to their personal opinions. A council is not. The Equality Act of 2010 and the Public Sector Equality Duty require public bodies to eliminate discrimination, advance equality and foster good relations between communities.

Let us also be clear: Pride in St Helens this year was funded externally. This is not about responsible council spending. It is about sending a message to LGBTQIA+ people that they are not welcome, not valued, and not worth celebrating.

We reject that completely.

Pride is not a political party event. Pride's existence has developed as a response to decades of oppression and discrimination. Pride aims to advance equality and to enhance community relations. This is why education surrounding Pride is so crucial.

The description of Pride as a harmful political movement whilst withdrawing council support raises serious questions about whether those legal duties are being served. Leadership means representing everyone in the borough, not singling out a protected community for exclusion.

Pride is not a threat to children. Pride is not a threat to our town. Pride is a celebration of love, identity, equality, resilience and community.

The real threat to St Helens is the politics of division. The real threat is a council leadership that seeks to make marginalised people the enemy instead of dealing with the serious issues residents face every day.

We see straight through it.

St Helens is better than this. Our communities are stronger when we stand together, not when we are divided by fear, prejudice and manufactured outrage.

St Helens Green Party will always stand with LGBTQIA+ people. We will always stand against hate. We will always fight for a town where everyone is treated with dignity, respect and compassion.

What a brilliant day celebrating St Helens Pride on Saturday! 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

Members of St Helens Green Party were proud to join the march, led by the fabulous Dross Queen, before heading over to the main event at The World of Glass.

Pride is about celebration, visibility, community and solidarity, and we were proud to stand alongside so many people showing that St Helens is no place for hate.

A huge thank you to everyone who organised, marched, performed, volunteered and made the day so special.
