We just wanted to raise the awareness to the danger of rat poison to other animals.
We recently had to say goodbye to our beautiful Hamza. He was found on Barden Drive (but hedgehogs can travel up to 3km a night) and started displaying symptoms of rat poison. Unfortunately it was too late to help him and he has now passed away. This is absolutely heartbreaking and it was so easily avoidable.
He came to us as a tiny baby and ended up over wintering with us. He was only released about 6 weeks ago.
Hedgehogs, and other wildlife including owls and other birds of prey, feed off dead animals, so it is likely that Hamza had eaten another animal killed by rat poison. The poison still has strength in dead animals, so any unsuspecting wildlife that comes to feed will then suffer with secondary poisoning and pass away.
Please stop using it. There are lots of safe, preventative methods or deterrents out there. We donβt need to poison our wildlife.
Thank you.
