There can be unseen hazards when open water swimming. Cold water shock, sudden drop offs and hidden underwater hazards are all risks when swimming in open waters.

Weโ€™re supporting Royal Life Saving Society UK - RLSS UK โ€™s Drowning Prevention Week to help children and their families enjoy water safely.

Knowing how to swim is a great skill - but it is not enough to stay safe in the water. True competency and confidence in and around water require knowledge of the Water Safety Code, including always staying together, stopping to think about and assess the dangers before getting into the water, and understanding what to do in an emergency.

This bank holiday weekend is looking hot, hot hot! โ˜€๏ธ

There are lots of spots across the county to cool off in. If youโ€™re going to go for a dip this weekend, remember:

- Check local signage to see if the lake, reservoir or river is suitable to swim in
- Stick together with your mates or tell someone where youโ€™re going
- Check the water for debris and other hazards first, remember you might not be able to spot hidden dangers under the surface
- If you get into trouble in the water, stay calm and float on your back while shouting for help

If youโ€™re on dry land and spot someone in trouble in the water, call 999 and ask for the Fire Service ๐Ÿš’
