‘Mining for Knowledge’ celebrates the 270th anniversary of the library by presenting nine short talks related to the library and its history to be held in the Pentland Room, The Quaker Meeting House, 7a Victoria Terrace, Edinburgh ED1 2JL.
The Wanlockhead Miners' Library is part of the Museum of Lead Mining, high in the Lowther Hills of Dumfries and Galloway. It is the second oldest miners' subscription library and was set up in 1756 with the aim to control the 'unruly' behaviour of, and for the mutual improvement of the lead miners! Since then, a heart of education and knowledge started beating with many scholars and innovative engineers arising from this small village. There was a thirst for the fiction of the day with the number of novels nearly equalling the number of texts related to sermons and religious matters.
See details and book tickets through 'Mining for Knowledge' | Museum of Lead Mining
There is also a coach trip from Edinburgh to the museum on the following day, Friday 5th June
