Principle or position. Which way will they jump?

I didn’t think the useless Bridget Phillipson would end up being useful but today she may have just placed a nail in the coffin of the Alliance for Wealden.

Labour’s Party chair Bridget Phillipson has told Labour councillors (across the country) sharing power with the Greens that their partners must reject the Green Party’s “Zionism is Racism” policy. If that assurance isn’t forthcoming, Labour says the power-sharing arrangement should end.

Here in Wealden, Labour sits alongside the Greens in the Alliance for Wealden, which controls the District Council. Rachel Millward leads both the Council and the Alliance and of course is the “Co deputy-leader” of the national Green Party.

I would expect Wealden’s Labour councillors to apply the position their own party has set out. That means asking Millward (and the Wealden Green Party) for a clear, public rejection of the policy, and being prepared to act if she refuses.

Will she give that assurance? And if she won’t, will Labour withdraw from the Alliance? What will the Liberal Democrats do?
Hopefully the next 168 hours will see further weakening of the Green influence in Wealden. Tick Tock.

It's been a busy week of meetings this week, ensuring local residents are represented at all levels from planning to policing, from potholes to protecting the Uckfield rail link.

Early this week I caught up with Sue Choppin our local PCSO from Wealden Police to have a street surgery for local residents with Hadlowdown PC . The usual concerns of rural Crime and speeding continues to be raised and I'm pleased that there will be a campaign in the village soon to educate and enforce speed limits through the village. Sue is always happy to meet resident groups across the Division so do drop me a line if you would like to arrange something.

Rural Crime remains a concern, specifically for isolated rural properties, so as the nights get darker and clocks change please be vigilant for any suspicious behaviour and ensure you report to Sussex Police at the time.

Five years ago today, Sir David Amess was murdered while doing what he had done for almost 40 years: serving the people who elected him.

He never stopped showing up for them. On the day his life was taken, he was there once again, listening and helping, just as he always had.

Today we remember a much-loved colleague and friend. Above all, our thoughts are with his wife and children, who carry his loss every day.
