Foster carers Wendy and Steve were considering giving up fostering after experiencing significant family bereavement. But then their foster daughter, Becky, came into their lives and completely changed their outlook.
Becky quickly became an integral part of the family and was even a bridesmaid at their daughter’s wedding. Wendy also recalls a cherished memory from a family trip to Disneyland: “We got off Space Mountain, squeezed my hand with tears in her eyes and said ‘thank you.” 🥹
Wendy and Steve also became heavily involved in the Mockingbird programme to help them provide the right support for Becky - a decision which had a transformative impact on their family.
It hasn’t always been easy. The couple found it difficult when Becky chose to move on to semi-independent living, but they remained a constant source of support in her life.
Now 19, Becky still speaks with them every day. 💕
They said: “We are about to celebrate our 21st year of fostering and our 7th year as Mockingbird Hub Home Carers and we firmly stand by that Becky helped us to get here.” 💬
This Foster Care Fortnight, the family's story shows just how powerful the impact of fostering is, not just on care experienced children and young people - but foster carers too.
