We were very sorry to hear of the passing of David Hockney.
As one of the most influential artists of our time, and with his strong connection to the East Riding, we know this loss will be deeply felt by many across our community.
In 2024, we were proud to deliver a project inspired by Hockney’s depictions of the Yorkshire Wolds. Working with students from two East Riding special schools, the initiative encouraged experimentation with multi-canvas works, new techniques, and collaborative approaches to art-making.
Reflecting on the project, our gallery technician, artist and former teacher Penny Barron shared:
“Ultimately, Hockney’s work influenced the entire learning experience for the students, providing them with a deeper understanding of the Wolds—its geology, landscape, and the history of the now disused Wolds railway line. The photographs capture only a small part of the six-month project, but the exhibition was a significant achievement for these students, many of whom had never visited a gallery before, let alone exhibited their work.”
We are grateful for the lasting inspiration of David Hockney’s work, and for the extraordinary legacy he leaves behind.
