A couple of historic anniversaries this summer - last month marked the 680th anniversary of the Battle of Crécy, an important conflict in the Hundred Years' War fought in August 1346. This month we remember the 670th anniversary of the Battle of Poitiers in September 1356. Edward the Black Prince fought at both. At this time, Berkhamsted Castle was an important military centre, and the Black Prince was accompanied by men of Berkhamsted such as Henry of Berkhamsted and "Little" John Raven. Henry's tomb can be seen today in St Peter's Church, Berkhamsted as can a memorial to John Raven, one of the Berkhamsted Bowmen.

In the mid-14th century, Henry of Berkhamsted (or Henry de Berkhampstede) was a significant figure in the retinue of Edward the Black Prince at Berkhamsted Castle. His name suggests he was a local with strong ties to the town. He was

BBC Radio 4 is marking the arrival of the Bayeux Tapestry in Britain with programmes about the Norman Conquest and its lasting legacy today. In The Power of the Bayeux Tapestry, George Parker, FT political editor, explores why the tapestry is first and foremost a deeply political object. Tracing an extraordinary history over nearly 1000 years, from Napoleon to the N***s, George singles out the moments which show the power of the Tapestry with its stories of war, ambition and betrayal.

George Parker on the political and diplomatic power of the Bayeux Tapestry over centuries.

This campaign was launched on 3rd September 2025. Back in July we celebrated the massive achievement of reaching over half of our target of £500,000 required to pay back the loan on the Fields and ensure they remain safe and free from development.

🇬🇧 🇫🇷 Yesterday, HM the King and Emmanuel Macron, Président de la République française, enjoyed a special preview of the Bayeux Tapestry at the British Museum.

"The tapestry's story is one of ambition and uncertainty, of oaths and journeys, of ships, councils, kings, comets and consequences [...] Yet it is not merely an English story, nor only a Norman one. Indeed, from the moment of its creation, it may have brought together our two peoples."

We have a wonderful new video about our what3words campaign to help Save Castle Fields. It very concisely and clearly explains how the the scheme works and how 3m x 3m plots of the fields can be sponsored and so saved from likely development.

Please do give it a watch, sponsor your space, and maybe pass it onto someone who might like to sponsor their own patch too!

Together we can create a new accessible open space, at the same time protecting and enhancing the fields' ecology as well as preserving their historical importance and links to the Castle. 🌱
