Belper North Mill

Belper North Mill UNESCO world heritage site and one of the world's first iron frame "fireproof" buildings built in 1804

A UNESCO world heritage site, Strutt’s North Mill is the birthplace of the industrial revolution, bringing with it one of the world’s first iron clad “fireproof” buildings and revolution at every turn. This site was one of the first to harness water power for textile production and operated at the height of Britain’s industrial power. With a history that is equally joyous, fascinating, revolutiona

ry and melancholic, the mill is a must visit piece of world history. This building was built following the destruction of the original mill by fire in 1803, today it stands as a monument to the ingenuity of the time, considerable thought has been given to its construction and the building is Grade I listed due to its pioneering architecture. Our collection features multiple priceless artifacts and working mill machines that are 200 years old, supported by the Derwent Valley Mills trust and a very strong group of volunteers we’re proud to represent our heritage and remain to this day a pillar of the Belper community, in addition to the museum the mill also hosts multiple events throughout the year. If you’d like to know more in preperation for your visit, please get in touch!

We had a lovely walk yesterday with a group of descendants of Samuel Slater from America and the UK to celebrate Slater's birthday!

They had a spinning demonstration from Kim, a visit from the mayor, a quick look in the mill and then a walk to visit Samuel's cottage on the Chevin, Milford where Samuel worked, and a couple of pubs along the way. It was great to meet you all!

Our walking festival begins tomorrow!!

The first walk is now sold out, but there are still plenty of walks to book on and enjoy over the 17 day event as part of the Belper 250 celebrations. One of these is '250 years of Belper Waterpower' by expert guide Dr Ian Jackson taking place on Saturday 6th June at 2pm. This fascinating walk around the waterways of the Belper Mill complex tells about Belper's industrial mill owners and renewable energy generators who, for 250 years, have continually improved the harnessing of the power of the Derwent. The perfect walk to complement the Belper Goes Green festival this weekend!

You can book online for all our walks and tours via our website www.belpernorthmill.org.uk/calendar

Have you seen these lovely ducks in the River Gardens?

It is a sculpture by Fiona Fineran as part of Beth's Poetry Trail, which was set up in honour of local poet Beth Fender who passed away in 2002.

We are delighted that Hilary Fender has volunteered to lead a walk covering the poetry trail as part of our walks festival on Saturday 13th June at 10.30am until 1pm.

You can book your place online via our website: www.belpernorthmill.org.uk/calendar

All proceeds for this walk are going to help maintain the trail.
