A packed Strutts main hall in Belper, witnessed Amber Valley Borough Council's planning committee approve a recommendation for the development of the Belper Mills last night.
The owners First Investments Real Estate Management now have the go ahead to create 130 flats, shop space, a restaurant or cafe, office space and a museum.
Our Belper Mills were on hand to listen to proceedings and intend to publish a comprehensive report on the plans in the coming week following a meeting tomorrow (18th February) with MP Jonathan Davis in which the next steps will be discussed.
But in the meantime, here are some of the takeaways from last night;
A number of Councillors (Town and District) made comments prior to the vote including Emma Monkman and Tracey Hill (both in favour) and Ben Bellamy (remaining ‘neutral’). MP Jonathan Davis (also in favour) spoke about the close working relationship with FI and other partners including OBM culminating in this ‘historic’ moment.
Some concerns were raised by the Planning Committee and others about the limited car parking planned; just 92 spaces.
Councillor Hill emphasised the importance of ensuring that the conditions imposed in the plans involving improvements to the North Mill should be upheld as a priority ahead of the main development of the site.
The plans were passed unanimously (no objections or abstentions).
A spokesman for First Investment made the following comments to OBM after the meeting.
‘We’re obviously delighted that the committee has passed the plans and this is a big first step. We want to set up communication channels with local residents to keep them informed.’
When asked about timescales, they added ‘there are a lot of conditions we have to work through now. That could take up to twelve months. Once on site it could take a further three years of construction’
