Vincent's - Ormeau Road

Vincent's - Ormeau Road Supporting the work of Saint Vincent de Paul. The Society is committed to helping those in need, regardless of religious beliefs or lifestyle. The Society of St.

We are a worldwide charitable Christian organisation with membership open to all and any. We seek to co-operate in making a more just and compassionate society. We do this by sharing ourselves - who we are and what we have - with people in need on a person to person basis. Our aim is to work to develop opportunities for those most in need by respecting their dignity, sharing hope and encouraging t

hem to take control of their own destiny. Home visitation is the cornerstone of our work. Every week around 2,500 visits are carried out throughout Northern Ireland financial and material assistance offered to the needy. Vincent de Paul (SVP) is a direct service non-profit organisation whose work primarily involves person-to-person contact with people who have a variety of needs. In addition to direct assistance, we try to promote self-sufficiency, enabling people to help themselves. Any assistance offered by the Society is given in a non-judgemental spirit of compassion, based on the need of the individual or family.

As we prepare to say goodbye to the Ormeau Road after over 40 years there are so many people past & present to thank that we could never name them all.
Our mission as Vincentians is to help those in need. Whilst you may no longer see our presence along the Ormeau Road we are still here and are only a phone call away. If you need help or support from SVP you can call us on 02890351561 and our conference teams in south/east Belfast will be there.
I would like to pay a special thank you to my wonderful team(s) of volunteers in our wee shop over the last 5 years. Without your contribution of time, energy, skill and hard work the shop would never have been able to open. I have loved getting to know you all and the friendships will last forever.
A special thanks must go to the McCarney family who severed our shop so passionately over more years than they care to remember. To Mary & John thank you for your support when I took over and for your continued support and friendship. To John Mooney my right hand man who has served for over 30 years thank you for your wisdom, guidance and friendship. To Marie Telford aka the boss I have never met anyone as funny and as amazing as you.....you're a legend of this shop and the work it has done over many years. Without you I would never have survived. Our friendship will continue.
Last put by no means least to you the people of the Ormeau Road my parish for the last 5 years. Thank you for welcoming me into your lives and homes for taking care of me and supporting the mission of SVP and myself personally. My heart is heavy and I can't put into words how much this experience has been to me. My final day will be Friday 9th and I hope to see as many of you as possible.

Love & God bless

It is with profound sorrow that the Society of St Vincent de Paul (SVP) Ireland mourns the passing of Pope Francis, who died on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88 in his residence at the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pope Francis was a beacon of humility, compassion, and social justice. His papacy, beginning in March 2013, was marked by a steadfast commitment to the marginalised, a trait that deeply resonates with the mission of SVP. He championed the causes of the poor, advocated for refugees, and called for urgent action on climate change, urging the world to care for “our common home.”

Pope Francis’s dedication to inclusivity and mercy redefined the Church’s approach to many social issues. He emphasised that the Church should be a “field hospital” for the wounded, focusing on healing and compassion rather than judgment. His famous words, “Who am I to judge?” signified a transformative shift towards a more understanding and open Church.

Pope Francis’s final years were marked by health challenges, including a prolonged battle with pneumonia. Despite his ailments, he remained devoted to his pastoral duties, embodying resilience and unwavering faith.

As we reflect on his legacy, SVP Ireland is inspired to continue our work with renewed vigour, guided by his example of selfless service and deep empathy. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the global Catholic community and all who mourn his loss.

May Pope Francis rest in eternal peace, and may his teachings continue to illuminate our path towards a more compassionate and just world.
