Belfast Health and Social Care Trust are proud to launch a new, comprehensive Dementia Information Booklet, designed to support people living with dementia and those who care for them. πŸ’™

This important resource has been co-produced in partnership with people living with dementia, carers, Alzheimer’s Society, Dementia NI, and Trust staff. By bringing together lived experience and professional expertise, the booklet reflects what truly matters to those navigating dementia every day.

The booklet brings together a wide range of information about:
β€’ Trust services available across Belfast
β€’ Community and voluntary sector support
β€’ Practical guidance to help individuals and carers access the right help, at the right time

It will become a key tool for navigation, information sharing and ongoing support, ensuring that people affected by dementia feel informed, connected and supported throughout their journey.

✨ Linda Hamilton, Paediatric Ophthalmology Manager in the Belfast Trust, has won the RCN Northern Ireland Nurse of the Year Award 2026 for her work to transform and improve eye care for premature babies.

πŸ† Organised by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN), Linda was presented with the award by Health Minister, Mike Nesbitt MLA, at a special ceremony held at the Culloden Hotel, Holywood.

πŸ‘ When Linda took over the Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) service, only 72.5% of at-risk infants were screened on time. She introduced a β€œzero-fail” system that raised this to 100% within three months helping to eliminate preventable blindness in Northern Ireland.

⭐ She modernised the service by introducing new imaging technology and training nurses and specialists to carry out most screenings, freeing doctors to focus on complex cases. Linda also protected vulnerable babies by successfully arguing to keep the screening threshold at 32 weeks, ensuring no infants at risk were excluded from care.

Olga O'Neill, Interim Director of Nursing, Midwifery, User Experience and Allied Health Professionals, congratulated all the event finalists:

"It was a privilege to come together to celebrate the remarkable dedication, skill and compassion of our nursing colleagues across Belfast Trust.

"Each finalist represents the very best of our profession - commitment to patients and their loved ones, unwavering teamwork and a deep sense of professionalism that makes a real difference to the lives of those we service.

"A very special congratulations to Linda Hamilton, our Nurse of the Year. Linda's achievement is richly deserved and reflects not only her exceptional leadership but also her humility and the respect she holds for her colleagues.

"To all our finalists and winners, thank you. Your work does not go unnoticed and these awards are a testament to the extraordinary contribution you make every single day". ✨

The recent incidents of civil unrest are deeply worrying. Belfast Trust has a diverse workforce and we are appalled that some of our staff have been subjected to racist abuse.

Belfast Trust has a zero tolerance approach to abusive behaviour. Any abuse of our staff will not be tolerated, this is unacceptable behaviour and we would encourage anyone subjected to racist abuse to report each incident to the PSNI and to tell their line manager.

We are very proud of our diverse workforce, and the contribution they make in our organisation and to the people we serve. It is important that each of us at this time reaches out to our colleagues, looks out for each other, and supports those who have experienced any racist hate crime or abuse.
