Residents must have the final say on Garvaghy Road.

With residents expressing fears that certain elements of politicians will do a u-turn on their position and allow a small number of Orangemen down the road, we say that the residents and residents alone have the FINAL SAY on what will happen.

The Orange Order said in their statement that if they get down with 60 members, they will push for their full lodge and bands to march down Garvaghy Road in the future.

This is why it is so important to not concede anything.

Residents MUST have the final say. Not any party, not any spokesperson, not the Parade’s Commission and not the Orange Order.

The vast majority of people do not want any Orangeman walking any length of the Garvaghy Road. For us, the matter is closed and has been for nearly three decades.

No rollbacks, no concessions. The chance for talking was thirty years ago, and that opportunity was lost after scores of people were murdered at the height of the dispute.

We cannot go back to those days. We cannot allow raw sectarianism to resurface in our town.

Everyone has a right to express their culture, but that has to be done in an area in which it is wanted. Respect the rights of residents to live in peace.

45 years ago today, on 20 August 1981, we remember INLA Volunteer and IRSP member Michael Devine, who died after 60 days on hunger strike in the H-Blocks of Long Kesh. Known as “Red Mick” Michael was the tenth and final hunger striker to die during the 1981 protest.

A dedicated Republican Socialist activist and Volunteer, Michael was a founding member of both the IRSP and INLA in Derry. Following the commencement of his friend and comrade Patsy O’Hara’s hunger strike, Michael became OC of the Republican Socialist Prisoners.

Michael remained steadfast to the end. Despite imprisonment, brutality and attempts to break his resolve, he refused to surrender his principles or allow his political identity to be taken from him.

“I refuse to change to suit the people who oppress, torture or imprison me, who wish to dehumanise me. I have the spirit of freedom which cannot be quenched by the most horrendous treatment. Of course, I can be murdered, but I remain what I am, a political prisoner of war.”

45 years on, Michael Devine is proudly remembered.

The IRSP wishes to comment on a recent incident in Belfast on Monday, in which a former member of the organisation was arrested and subsequently charged in connection with alleged drug offences.

Drugs, and particularly those involved in their supply and distribution, represent a serious scourge on our communities. The damage caused by drugs is witnessed first-hand in communities across the country, destroying lives, families and communities.

As a Republican Socialist organisation, the IRSP has always committed itself to the defence of our communities. That means opposing imperialist aggression, but it also means standing firmly against anti-community activity, including the supply and distribution of drugs and those who profit from the misery they cause.

Our position is unequivocal. Any member who becomes involved in the supply, distribution or sale of illegal drugs places themselves outside the Republican Socialist Movement and at odds with the communities we seek to defend.

The IRSP will not tolerate such activity, nor will we allow the actions of individuals to undermine our commitment to protecting and supporting our communities

More Lies from the PSNI

On a day when the PSNI have released yet another groundless ‘shock, horror’ statement supposedly linked to the INLA. Another factual story about one IRSP activists fight to clear his name, from a persistent PSNI dirty tricks campaign against him, has gone largely unnoticed.

IRSP Ard Comhairle member Sean Carlin was wrongfully arrested in 2024 after the PSNI abused forensic tests and results to pursue a malicious charge of ‘cocaine possession’ against him. In time honoured fashion however, the PSNI were unable to provide any actual evidence to back up their allegation, and, having served its purpose of pure political harassment, the case was thrown out of court.

Much to the frustration of the PSNI and the Police Ombudsman, Sean has now gone on the offensive in relation to this gross abuse of Police power and has secured relief in the High Court in order to force a new Ombudsman investigation into the conduct of the individual PSNI members involved in trying to frame him.

A previous complaint made by Sean to the Police Ombudsman around the issue was rejected out of hand, and the decision of the High Court to now force a revisiting of the issue suggests that the days of the Ombudsman casually providing cover for the actions of corrupt PSNI members may be coming to an end. We wait in hope.

Sean is also taking a civil action against the PSNI and the PPS in relation to personal injuries caused to him, due to PSNI misfeasance in public office and malicious prosecution.

Unusually, for the PSNI, they had no comment to make, when approached by the press in relation to false accusations being made against a Republican Socialist activist.

For our part, the Irish Republican Socialist Party will wait and see how this issue is delt with in the field of legal action.

One thing is for certain however - The PSNI remain a deeply corrupt and unaccountable politically motivated force, committed only to the harassment and destruction of principled Irish republicans in places like West Belfast and elsewhere.

We once again call on the working-class nationalist community (and those who claim to politically represent them) to withdraw all support for PSNI.

Today, the IRSP joined our comrades in the RSYM as we stood shoulder to shoulder with like-minded revolutionary republicans from across the city to protest the charging of a local teenager for wearing a commemorative top in memory of Derry hero and Hunger Striker, Patsy O’Hara.

We utterly condemn this blatant act of political policing. Once again, the British state has shown its willingness to criminalise the remembrance of Irish patriots.

Let us be absolutely clear: no matter what you throw at us, you will never stop us from remembering our patriot dead. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten, and their memory will continue to inspire future generations.

Today we remember INLA volunteer and IRSP activist Kevin Lynch on his 45th anniversary, he died on this day 1981 following 71 days on hunger strike.

Kevin, an INLA Volunteer was arrested in December 1976 and charged with conspiracy to obtain arms. He received a 10 year sentence in December 1977.

Kevin excelled at Gaelic games and had captained the under-16 Derry team which won an all-Ireland hurling trophy in 1972.

He stood as a H-Block/Armagh candidate in the Waterford constituency during the June 1981 general election in the South and polled extremely well despite missing out on election.

Kevin died after 71 days on hunger strike on 1 August 1981. It was followed the next day by that of IRA Volunteer Kieran Doherty. Kevin had been lapsing into frequent periods of unconsciousness in the last four days, having already lost his sight, hearing and speech. His family were at his bedside throughout the final days until he died in the early hours of Saturday morning.

His funeral took place the following Monday in his home town of Dungiven. Between the return of his body to his home and the removal for Requiem Mass on Monday afternoon, a constant stream of mourners queued outside to pay their respects. The road was decorated with Tricolours and black flags.

The RUC and the UDR made every effort to disrupt the funeral, holding up cars and forcing buses to park outside of town so that the passengers would have to make their way on foot. Ulsterbus in Belfast cancelled bookings at the last minute. Nevertheless, mourners came in convoys of cars and black taxis.

At mid day the coffin bearing the Tricolour, Starry Plough, gloves and beret, was carried to the nearby church. The procession was led by a lone piper followed by the Lynch family, relatives of other Hunger Strikers, and senior representatives of the IRSP and the broad republican movement, along with the National H-Block/Armagh Committee.

Five British Army helicopters flew overhead as the coffin entered the church grounds. Applause broke out momentarily as an 18 strong INLA guard of honour marched up to es**rt the coffin to the church door.

At the graveside, the piper played I’ll Wear No Convict’s Uniform. The Last Post was also played and wreaths were laid, including from both the INLA and IRA Army Councils.

A uniformed INLA Volunteer then read a statement on behalf of the INLA Army Council, stating regret at Kevin’s death and applauding his heroism. “And let’s be clear, Kevin’s sacrifice wasn’t some abstract ideal. It was a direct response to a British regime that tried to crush Irish resistance by labelling our fighters as criminals".
