We are delighted to be a part of EHOD 26 and will be open Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th September 12-5pm

Step inside the historic heart of Sailortown and discover the story of one of Belfast’s most significant waterfront communities at St Joseph’s Church, reopened and brought back to life by the Sailortown Regeneration Group.

Built to serve dockworkers, sailors and their families, St Joseph’s stands as a powerful reminder of Sailortown’s rich maritime and industrial heritage. Once at the centre of a thriving dockside village, the church remained even as much of the surrounding community was lost during the construction of the M2 motorway in the 1970s.

Today, the building has been carefully revived as a vibrant community hub and cultural venue, reconnecting people with the stories, traditions and spirit of Sailortown.

Reflecting the theme of Heritage at Risk, St Joseph’s highlights both the vulnerability of historic buildings and the communities they serve. Having experienced periods of closure, underuse and deterioration, the church’s transformation demonstrates how heritage can be safeguarded through community-led regeneration—preserving not only the building itself, but also the social history and identity of Belfast’s docklands for future generations.
