Today was ‘International Overdose Awareness Day’ and volunteers at the People’s Kitchen stood with families and friends of those who have lost their lives to addiction, as the City Hall was illuminated in the colour Purple to acknowledge the event.

A time to reminisce, and share stories of sons and daughters who had been taken far too early by drugs.

A time too, for People’s Kitchen to reaffirm our support for the families, and to re-commit to actively seeking improved services for those battling the scourge of Addiction.

We are extremely grateful for the quick response of the community rescue service and NIAS today following reports of a homeless man who required medical treatment. CRS were able to safely transport him to the ambulance crew. Thanks to Team Haven for their help with this also, thankfully the male is now in hospital receiving treatment.

We were delighted to welcome the Secretary Of State and NIO Ministers to our breakfast morning who spoke with our volunteers and those using our service. They listened to the concerns and challenges for those experiencing homelessness, addiction and mental health problems and have give commitment that they will work with the NI Executive to reduce rough sleeping.

As Andy Burnham has committed to “everyone in” for Christmas, we hope this can be achieved in Northern Ireland. We need long term commitment from the NIO & the NI Executive to end round sleeping which can be achieved.
