Barrmill Conservation Group The BCG are a group of like-minded people who are committed to making environmental improvements to benefit our community and our local biodiversity.

Barrmill Conservation Group is a group of volunteers dedicated to improving the appearance, amenities, and natural environment of the Barrmill, Greenhills, and Burnhouse communities for the benefit of locals and visitors. The group is an initiative set up under the auspices of the Barrmill & District Community Association and works with the advice and assistance of the NAC Ranger Service, NAC Stre

etscene, BTCV, etc. Projects include various improvements at the Community Centre, Barrmill Park, the Vale Grove, Dead Man's Planting, Greenhills, etc. The group works on the second Saturday of every month from 11am to 3pm and is fully insured through NAC and BTCV. New members are always welcome. Events are also held, such as training, biological recording, bat walks, etc.

Barrmill Hall

Thanks to Lynda, Fiona, Julie and Stuart who stayed later on Saturday afternoon to tidy up around the hall. What a nice difference today . I gave it a final clean over with leaf blower today as well.

Barrmill folk - please come forward and save the village hall - the hall needs new committee to run it and stop it from closure.

Both the land and hall are owned by the Barrmill community association. It is solvent but the old committee have now passed away or retired completely . There are no office bearers left but there are still about 7 committee members. New Barrmill folk are welcomed to take active committee roles to keep the charity going. .

You will miss the hall when it's demolished and there nothing in village at all but tumbleweeds so please do not let it get that far.

Please try and come forward or ask your neighbours and friends if they have the time to do it. So many things could be done in hall again and the biggest improvements to village life all come from having a collective voice and ability to influence decisions / apply for funding .

We will be at dog show on 20 September. Talk to everyone then.

The hall still has users and much interest, it just needs committee.

Barrmill September Workday

This month we held our workday earlier than normal so we could get things in order for dog show. We had 9 volunteers today.

Fiona ordered all the rosettes

Found all the things in centre we need for the dog show

Advertising Banners - got plenty, just need to create and print the new date and time posters to go on them.

Dog show boundary tape and posts for ring - got them.

Raffle tickets - just need prizes donated if we're having raffle.

PA. My PA was a bit small I thought last time, so I will ask and see if can borrow one. Ideally a good battery power one.. Failing that will use mine, but could do with a microphone boost of some sort

Monthly maintenance jobs - got grass cut, beds weeded, thanks to Joan, Lynda, Julie and Fiona, plus branches cut away from paths.
Noticed plums have a good crop this year but they are not quite ready yet.
Alastair and his boys kindly cleared weeds and leaves away from around community centre. Later on, Stuart came to help clear around the centre too.
Tatties were dug as well at Allotment and beds cleared of weeds . Cheers to Andrew for all the hard labour at the potatoes today.

We are holding September workday this Saturday 29 August .

It's early this year as the normal second Saturday of month billed for 12th Sept clashes with the Carving Show where we will be then.

Come along this Saturday. We need to get the park prepared for dog show and look out all the things we'll need. Also harvest potatoes. Free organic potatoes for everyone who helps!

Celtic Tree Circle maintenance today

This project was started in March 2023 so is now in its 4th year.

The design was laid out to the four directions, creating four entrances with tree guardians.
The circle contains various spiritual trees representing months of the year based on Celtic Ogham. The central lawn is a perfect place for a sheltered retreat and is often a secret location for a teddy bears picnic.

The trees have grown a good size, especially the two Silver Birches guarding the 'North' entrance. Like most trees when young , they have a lot of lower branches to help exert dominance over the surrounding grassy vegetation by shading it out. Unfortunately, these branches were obscuring entrance into the circle so they were trimmed off today and this has raised crown of trees so they develop nice white tree trunks in time.

The western ( the one on right) birch tree has taken the brunt of the storms and could do with staking to keep it growing straight as it has developed a lean due to this strong prevailing wind.

Some trees had also suffered damage from the early morning Roe deer visits by having bark scraped. We had put clear plastic guards on them which were getting brittle with age, so decided to put more substancial protection on the Birches and Rowan today.

The Alder trees at eastern side had received deer damage a few years ago. One on right was replaced with new tree. One on left had main leader shoot nibbled and has now grown quite ' fat' rather than upright and conical, deprived of its leading shoot . Removed the side growth to give it a more balanced shape, but might still replace whole tree in winter and relocate this one while it is still small enough to transplant.

The young Ash tree ( for March) had completely died and will need replaced. On other side of circle : Hazel, Holly and Apple will also need replaced. An Elder tree will also be needed on the forth quadrant, which is last tree in the circle before Birches again. I have some of these trees spare already and will bring them to plant.

Come and visit this unique feature of Barrmill.

Barrmill workdays are the second Saturday of every month if you are inspired to get involved. Good ideas, hard work and dedication are the main qualities volunteers bring to Barrmill Park and these help to create a magical community we can all benefit from and share in.
