Bedford Hospital This is the official page for Bedford Hospital, part of Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Frequently Asked Questions

1.

This is the official page for Bedford Hospital. You can also visit our website at www.bedfordshirehospitals.nhs.uk or follow our account on Twitter

Please note that this site is not monitored 24 hours a day and that cannot be used to give medical advice. In a medical emergency you should dial 999 and for non-urgent medical advice you should dial 111. How is the site man

aged? This site does not have a dedicated team to service the enquiries made through it. The staff who post the responses are doing so in addition to their main roles.

2. What can I post on the site? Please remember that Facebook is a public forum and is not the appropriate place for us to discuss specific cases or complaints. In such cases we may message you directly to inform you on how best to resolve your issue. Whilst we encourage healthy debate and appreciate that our users will have opinions on current events, we ask everyone to remember that this site has a large and diverse user base, so please be respectful when making your comments. Our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) is our dedicated department that deals with these enquiries and can be contacted via email at [email protected] or by phone on 01234 795814.

3. What is your deletion policy? Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust will remove any comments that are considered to be:

- Offensive
- Abusive
- Threatening
- Deliberately insensitive or inflammatory
- Contain links

We may remove posts that have no connection to the Trust as this site is for local healthcare information. It is inappropriate for us to comment on or host debates about actions being undertaken by other Trusts, other professional bodies or other countries. Where possible we will try to inform a user that their post has been deleted and offer an explanation as to why. However, as this site is not run by a dedicated team, we may not always be able to do this.

4. Why do you mention the names of some patients? Patients that we name in our articles and posts have agreed and signed to do so. Each patient fills out a consent form which must be signed by them and authorised by a responsible clinician if appropriate.

5. How can I contact you if I don’t want to post my questions on here? You can contact the communications team via email at [email protected]. Again please note that emails are not monitored 24 hours a day cannot be used to give medical advice. Alternatively, you can contact our PALS team (patient advice and liaison service) via email at [email protected].

Sophie is the Lead Diabetes Specialist Nurse at Bedford Hospital.

“I support people living with diabetes in a variety of ways, including face-to-face clinics, telephone support, education, and helping patients manage their diabetes safely and confidently in their day-to-day lives. Part of my role involves supporting women with diabetes during pregnancy to help achieve the best possible outcomes for both mother and baby.

“It is extremely important that people feel comfortable speaking openly about their diabetes without fear of judgement or stigma. Living with diabetes can be challenging both physically and emotionally, and open conversations help patients feel supported, understood, and empowered to ask for help when they need it.”

Last week we celebrated the official handover and opening of our next phase of works at Bedford Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) - a brand new pre-assessment and urology one stop space on the first floor at Gilbert Hitchcock House.

The new and improved facilities will improve elective surgery waiting times through an increase of preoperative assessment capacity and the urology one-stop will allow urological diagnostics to be delivered by the urology team on the same visit as the first consultant appointment, reducing the need for patients to return multiple times

The teams will be moving in over the coming weeks and patients will be advised if and when their appointment is taking place here.

Thank you to the Mayor of Bedford Borough, Tom Wootton for joining us to mark the occasion with our clinical team, delivery team and contractor.

This week is with the theme 'Strike out stigma'.

Claire is a Nurse Consultant for Diabetes at Bedford Hospital and has worked at the Trust for 15 years.

“I am the clinical lead for type 1 diabetes and diabetes technology, and I spend most of my time supporting people to access and use technology to help manage their condition. I am passionate about advocating for young adults, educating and empowering people with diabetes, and supporting individuals living with type 1 diabetes and disordered eating.

“Creating safe spaces for discussion is particularly important for young adults and for those experiencing diabetes distress, where shame and judgement can prevent them asking for help. Encouraging honest conversations helps to shift the focus from blame and perfection to understanding, education and support, which allows for better outcomes.”

For Volunteers’ Week we celebrated our amazing volunteers at events across both hospital sites.

We thanked our volunteers with afternoon tea, cake and speeches. It was a wonderful opportunity to come together and acknowledge how valued our volunteers are not just to patients, but staff too.

Thank you to our volunteers for everything you do, not just this week, but all year round.

Congratulations to Meadowbank Neonatal Unit for achieving Silver in their recent ward accreditation!

All assessment categories were found to be excellent (scoring 80% or higher), with particular success in patient safety, Family Integrated Care (FiCARE), and nutrition and feeding. Parents shared that they felt involved in the care of their babies, and appreciated the rest facilities available for when they needed them.

Well done to all the team for creating and maintaining this safe, welcoming environment, for those families who are going through such difficult times.

This week has been !

Our Dietitian teams held their annual BLMK away day focusing on Health Inequalities. They learned from a guest speaker presenting on diversity in dietetics, followed by each dietetic service presenting an aspect of their work, where they had focused on equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI).

The event was a success, with those in attendance enjoying the lectures, team working, and networking.
