In such cases we may message you directly to inform you on how best to resolve your issue. Whilst we encourage healthy debate and appreciate that our users will have opinions on current events, we ask everyone to remember that this site has a large and diverse user base, so please be respectful when making your comments. Our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) is our dedicated department that deals with these enquiries and can be contacted via email at [email protected] or by phone on 01234 795814.


3. What is your deletion policy? Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust will remove any comments that are considered to be:

- Offensive
- Abusive
- Threatening
- Deliberately insensitive or inflammatory
- Contain links

We may remove posts that have no connection to the Trust as this site is for local healthcare information. It is inappropriate for us to comment on or host debates about actions being undertaken by other Trusts, other professional bodies or other countries. Where possible we will try to inform a user that their post has been deleted and offer an explanation as to why. However, as this site is not run by a dedicated team, we may not always be able to do this.


4. Why do you mention the names of some patients? Patients that we name in our articles and posts have agreed and signed to do so. Each patient fills out a consent form which must be signed by them and authorised by a responsible clinician if appropriate.


5. How can I contact you if I don’t want to post my questions on here? You can contact the communications team via email at [email protected]. Again please note that emails are not monitored 24 hours a day cannot be used to give medical advice. Alternatively, you can contact our PALS team (patient advice and liaison service) via email at [email protected].

Meet Naomi, Principal Pharmacist for Education and Training.

“I was drawn to Pharmacy as it lets me combine my love of science with helping people. Throughout my career I have worked in both primary and secondary care, and seen the impact that Pharmacists can have on the health and wellbeing of patients and the public, alongside supporting tackling health inequalities.

“I find supporting the training of Pharmacy colleagues and other healthcare professionals incredibly rewarding. By delivering training we are able to support them to prescribe safely and effectively for all our patients.

We are planning to expand and enhance our Urgent and Emergency Care (UEC) facilities at Bedford Hospital to better meet the evolving healthcare needs of our community as the area continues to experience significant growth.

The Trust have been allocated £50m in Government funding (subject to approvals anticipated 2027) to expand and enhance urgent and emergency care facilities.

The development means that patients will be seen more quickly and in a modern environment, with less patients needing to be admitted overnight due to enhanced diagnostic and treatment facilities. The development also addresses some of the current challenges with an ageing hospital estate.

Join us at our public engagement event on Monday 16 November between 2pm and 7pm in the Committee Room to find out more. We are committed to listening to your views and receiving early feedback, to incorporate into our designs.

Next for , meet Caroline, Oncology Pharmacist at Bedford Hospital.

“Oncology is always developing, and there have been many changes over my career, with new more complex treatments being approved all the time; there’s always something new to learn! I deal with cancer chemotherapy prescriptions, which includes checking doses, blood results, and interactions with a patients regular medicines/herbal medicines.

“I love working with my consultants and doing my little bit in the fight against cancer. Its lovely when they query me and I’m able to help them decide on the best way forward with a patient’s treatment.

"Pharmacy appealed to me as it was a different career path to becoming a doctor that still had an impact in helping people with their health.

“I think it’s important to recognise the many different careers that make up the NHS, there are many different cogs that make the healthcare machine work and the NHS wouldn’t be able to provide the care it does without all of us working together.”

At Bedfordshire Hospitals, we are due to implement the BadgerNet platform, one of the largest maternity and neonatal electronic patient record (EPR) systems in the UK, across our maternity services whilst progressing the neonatal provision, in late autumn/winter.

Used by around 60% of maternity units in England, and 99% of neonatal units, BadgerNet will support the secure sharing of relevant maternity and neonatal information across Trusts, ensuring continuity of care.

This implementation will also transform the way pregnancy notes are shared, making information easier to access digitally throughout your maternity journey with Badger Notes.

Badger Notes gives pregnant women and birthing people a convenient place to access and keep track of important maternity information, helping make appointments, care plans and pregnancy details easier to follow.

"I help patients by treating them with kindness, respect and empathy when they arrive in Pharmacy. I listen carefully to their needs and make sure they feel comfortable and supported.

“What interested me in Pharmacy is my passion for healthcare and my desire to help people improve their health and wellbeing.

Meet Eleanor, Pharmacy Technician for Dispensary at Bedford Hospital.

"I was never originally interested in pharmacy. I was looking for apprenticeships and my mum actually suggested pharmacy to me. I applied, went for an interview, and I was asked to do a half day to see how I got on. I came away feeling really excited.

"I’m currently a team lead and help to manage the dispensary team, alongside a few of my colleagues. We work together to run a smooth workflow and provide the best care to patients. I provide counselling to patients when handing out medicines and remain empathetic when dealing with queries.

"Pharmacy Week is important to me because it celebrates all of the different roles within pharmacy. It’s important to recognise everyone’s hard work. We all work well as a team and we wouldn’t be the department we are without everyone’s help."

Today is , an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the valuable contribution pharmacy technicians make within healthcare.

Anna is a Pharmacy Technician for Clinical Services at Bedford Hospital. Speaking about her journey so far, she said: "My journey at Bedford Hospital started 18 years ago as a Domestic Assistant, then an interest in Pharmacy had me change to a Pharmacy Assistant. Since then, I have also worked as a Medicines Management Assistant, and recently qualified as a Pharmacy Technician and Accuracy Checking Technician (ACT).

"I work closely with patients on the wards, taking medication histories, completing medicines reconciliation and helping patients understand their medicines. I also work alongside doctors, nurses and pharmacists to ensure patients receive safe and effective care.

"The best part of my job is being able to make a difference to patients every day. I enjoy meeting different people, helping them with their medicines and being part of a supportive team.

"I am proud of how far I have come, and my journey shows that with determination, hard work and support, there are always opportunities to grow and develop within the NHS."

More than 270 people attended our ‘Gut health matters’ medical lecture last week, presented by Consultant Gastroenterologists Dr Joya Bhattacharyya and Dr Jackie Harvey.

One attendee said: “Dealing with gut issues can be a bit of a minefield as there’s a lot to understand. It was great to attend this medical lecture to learn more about the gut and what we can do to look after it. The talk was so interesting and engaging, I’ll definitely be attending future events.”

Join us for the next health and wellbeing event for Bedford Hospital cancer patients and their carers on Wednesday 28 October.

The event will run from 10.30am to 1pm in the Addison Centre, MK42 8PN.

Topics include the Primrose Unit Cancer Information and Support Service, Blue Sky Carers Support, chair-based exercise, and much more.
