Bedford Crime Update, Some Improvement, But We Are Still a Long Way from Where We Need to Be
The latest crime figures for Bedford Borough show some improvement compared with the first half of May. Violence, theft, burglary, criminal damage, drug offences and vehicle crime have all reduced.
That is welcome and credit should go to the officers and staff working hard to tackle crime across the Borough.
But let's not get carried away.
In just two weeks there were still:
• 258 violent offences
• 145 theft offences
• 57 public order offences
• 24 sexual offences
• 20 drug offences
• 16 burglaries
• 12 robberies
• 8 weapons offences
Those are not the figures of a town that has solved its crime problems.
What concerns me most is that almost half of all crime in Bedford remains concentrated in and around the town centre. The police's own analysis identified 1,855 offences in the High Street, Silver Street, Harpur Street and Midland Road area over a 12 month period, including more than 700 violent offences.
This is not simply a late night economy issue either. Much of the offending takes place during the day when residents, shoppers and visitors are using the town centre.
If we want Bedford to thrive, attract visitors, increase footfall and encourage businesses to invest, then people must feel safe. Safety is the foundation on which everything else is built.
The recent improvement is encouraging, but the numbers remain far too high and there is clearly much more work to do. We need sustained enforcement, visible policing and a relentless focus on repeat offenders, theft, violence, drugs and antisocial behaviour.
Do you think Bedford town centre feels safer than it did six months ago?
I'd be interested to hear the experiences of residents, businesses and visitors.
