Behind every statistic is a child in a safe classroom, a marginalised family receiving vital healthcare, a young person learning new skills and gaining independence, or someone finding safety and support when they need it most.

Only last year, together we helped support:

🧑 46,733 people through HOPE healthcare programmes across Kolkata, including 15,819 patients treated at HOPE Hospital
🧑 9,078 children through education, crèches, sponsorship, and inclusive learning programmes
🧑 1,579 children and adults protected from abuse and neglect through Residential Child Care and Child Watch
🧑 880 young people through vocational training and income-generation opportunities to help build sustainable futures

And while these numbers are significant, much of this support starts with everyday essentials:

🧑 £8.60 can help provide a pair of shoes and a school uniform
🧑 £30 can buy educational stationery and toys
🧑 Β£80 can contribute towards a teacher’s monthly salary
🧑 £100 can help purchase educational books for a child

These services are critical, not extras. Education, healthcare, protection, and opportunity can change the direction of a child’s life and help families build greater stability for the future.

Every donation, large or small, helps make this possible.

To mark the recent World No To***co Day, children supported by HOPE’s Child Watch programme took part in an awareness session exploring the harmful effects of to***co use and why making informed choices matters.

The young participants then helped spread awareness by creating and displaying informative posters for other children and members of the community.

A child should not have to choose between survival and childhood! πŸ‘‡

When we talk about child labour, it is easy to imagine extreme situations. But for many street-connected children and families in Kolkata, the reality is often closer, quieter, and shaped by survival.

In communities facing generational poverty and instability, children may sell items on the street, collect recyclable waste, help in markets, care for siblings, or take on informal work to contribute to household income. Most miss school regularly. Others stop attending altogether.

This does not happen because families do not care. Often, it happens because options are limited.

Without intervention, the consequences can be long-lasting - reduced access to education, increased risk of exploitation, poorer health outcomes, and cycles of poverty that continue into adulthood.

Early support is vital. Access to education, safe spaces, healthcare, family support, and consistent intervention can help reduce the pressures that place children at risk in the first place.

On World Day Against Child Labour, and every day, we recognise a difficult reality for many children and why sustained support remains essential. Read more about how HOPE has been making a difference in the lives of street-connected children at https://ow.ly/g5sY50Z2cIh

After learning about street-connected children in Kolkata at school, Lila felt inspired to do something to help.

So, at just 7 years old, on 30 May this year, she took on the Bristol 5K Inflatable Run and had a brilliant time doing it!

With the support of 17 wonderful supporters, Lila raised an incredible Β£264 (including Gift Aid) to support children and families living in extremely difficult circumstances in Kolkata.

As Lila’s dad, Natan, shared:

β€œSaturday went great; Lila ran the 5K really well and had lots of fun in the process. She is looking forward to the next one already.”

Lila’s story reminds us that fundraising can be fun and something the whole family can get involved in. Whether it’s an inflatable run, challenge event, walk, bake sale, or something completely your own - every pound raised helps us break cycles of poverty for Kolkata's street-connected children and enables us to keep providing protection, safety and education.

This June, we are inviting yoga instructors to join the Yoga for HOPE campaign and be part of a growing community of teachers across the UK and beyond, coming together to support street-connected children in Kolkata.

There are many ways to get involved - host a class, run a workshop, teach online or in person, or dedicate part of your existing sessions to the campaign. Whether it’s one class or a series, your practice will help fund access to education, healthcare, and protection for children and families facing extreme hardship.

Whether you teach regularly or want to offer something special for International Day of Yoga, your voice, your space, and your community will make a huge difference.

Yoga gave so much to us - this is a chance to give something back 🧑
