REMEMBERING: Today we remember Firefighter Roderick MacLeod, 25, from Inverness Fire Station, who tragically died in the line of duty whilst tackling a blaze on this day in 1981.

At 17:20 hours on the the 21st of May 1981, the then Northern Fire Brigade received a 999 call reporting a fire at Aberchalder Lodge, four miles from Invergarry.

The then volunteer firefighters of Fort Augustus were the first appliance to to mobilised, and on their arrival found a severe fire in progress, with flames coming through the roof of the isolated guest house.

The Officer in Charge immediately sent an assistance message requesting further appliances and firefighters. Two appliances from Inverness and one from Fort William were mobilised on receipt of the assistance message.

On arrival of the additional appliances and crews, a reliable water supply for firefighting was established, and firefighters worked for hours to bring the fire under control and prevent it from spreading.

Firefighter MacLeod was on the ground floor of the property with another firefighter, working to extinguish pockets of fire in the living room, when suddenly and without warning the first floor collapsed down onto them, trapping Firefighter MacLeod.

Immediate attempts were made by firefighter MacLeod’s colleagues to locate him, with firefighters digging with their hands through rubble. He was found trapped under beams, which were too heavy to lift by hand, and hydraulic jacks had to be used.

Despite the best efforts of a local doctor, and firefighter MacLeod’s colleagues to resuscitate him he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Firefighter MacLeod was married and had served with the Northern Fire Brigade for four years.

The most likely cause of the blaze was believed to have been an electrical fault under the flooring of the bedroom which was directly above the living room. Most of the Lodge dating from the 17th Century was destroyed in the fire and subsequent collapse.

Firefighter Roderick MacLeod, gone but never forgotten.

A cracking evening down by the river for the Beauly crew — making the most of the better weather and sharpening up our pump drills 🚒☀️

Using our LPP to feed the main pump, we focused on a key lesson: you can’t put out more water than you’re receiving. We call this overdrawing the supply and you’ll quickly run into dropping pressures, poor flow, and a pump that won’t thank you for it! We discussed why and more importantly how we rectify it.

It’s all about teamwork, communication, and getting the balance right — supporting the supply, managing demand, and keeping everything running smoothly when it counts.

If this looks like something you’d enjoy and you can offer daytime cover, we’re currently looking for new on-call firefighters to join the team here in Beauly. Get in touch and start your journey 🚒

A good wee couple of hours training for the crew this week 💪🚒
We were through in Dingwall making good use of their tower for some ladder drills. The 13.5m ladder was out. While running the hose reel jet and a length of 45 — what we call our “in the middle” hose.
There was plenty of line hauling, practising knots, and working through some pump drills from the main pump to keep everything running smoothly.
Training regularly is vital — without it, skill fade can creep in. That’s why we’re always mixing things up. Changing locations, switching drills, and using different setups keeps us thinking on our feet. The role of a firefighter is dynamic — no two jobs are ever the same — so it’s all about thinking out the box, adapting, and overcoming whatever’s put in front of us.
All in all, a cracking session, plenty laughs, plenty learning, and another step in keeping ourselves ready for when the pager goes

Are you a crofter or land manager intending to do a falasgair/controlled burn?

To avoid false alarms and crews being sent out unnecessarily, there are five steps you should follow.

1️⃣Call our Fire and Rescue Control Room on 01382 835804 in advance and notify us of the location of your intended burn, your address, postcode, and best access point.

2️⃣Have a burn plan in place.

3️⃣Have sufficient people in place to manage the burn, keep the size of the burn manageable, check wind speed and direction and ensure you have adequate fire breaks to prevent unwanted spread.

4️⃣If the fire gets out of control, call 999 immediately asking for Fire Service and notify us of address, postcode, and best access point.

5️⃣Always ensure your fire is completely out before you leave it and reattend the next day to ensure it is fully extinguished.
