Ripple Effect Bringing farmers in rural Africa together to learn more, grow more and sell more.🌱 We’re creating a wave of change in rural Africa. But we don’t stop there.

Rural Africa is rich with opportunity: with resourceful communities, and land from which food and futures can grow 🌱

But families face poverty that is extreme, cruel, and worst of all – unnecessary. The knowledge and skills needed for farmers to grow more and sell more is often lost. And now the climate crisis is threatening to push millions of people back into extreme poverty. It starts when we

bring farmers together with community trainers and experienced peer farmers to share ideas and learn new skills. The focus is on practical approaches that help them grow more and sell more, so they can invest in their farms’ and families’ futures. The effect grows, because for every family we work with, 3 more families benefit too. Farmers share what they learn with their neighbours and communities. Then those farmers do the same. Soon thousands, then hundreds of thousands, experience the benefits, in communities where everyone is included, and everyone thrives. It’s efficient, effective and builds a momentum that spreads far beyond our programmes. Ripple Effect currently works in six African countries: Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda and Zambia.

70% of unpaid care work in Africa is carried by women and girls.

And next week, that work is taking centre stage at the African Union.

From 2-4 September, Ripple Effect colleagues will join leaders, researchers and organisations from across the continent at the Africa Care Forum in Addis Ababa, bringing together evidence, ideas and African-led solutions around one shared ambition: putting care at the centre of Africa’s development agenda.

We’ll be there with learning from our work in Ethiopia and Kenya, where we’re exploring practical ways to recognise, reduce and redistribute unpaid care work, from the responsibilities women carry at home to the wider norms that shape how care is shared.

Our colleagues sofanit Mesfin, Beatrice Were, Berhanu Feleke, and others from Ripple Effect will be joining the conversation, sharing what we’re learning and connecting with others working to turn evidence into change.

We’re looking forward to being part of this important continental conversation, with support from the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), a key funding partner of the Africa Care Forum, alongside the African Union, CREAWKenya, International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and other organisations working to move the care agenda forward.

We shared her story this summer. Farming in rural Ethiopia, unpredictable rains and declining harvests have made it increasingly difficult for her to grow enough food for her family.

With new farming skills, Wednesh has started improving her soil and growing a wider variety of nutritious vegetables in her kitchen garden.

But lasting change takes time.

Regular support helps us continue working alongside farming families like Wednesh's across rural Africa, while giving us the flexibility to respond where the need is greatest.

Next week, our team is heading to Kigali for the Africa Food Systems Forum 2026.

Elias Owuor Pande and colleagues from our Rwanda team: Angelique Barongo, LeonFidele Ndikubwimana, Apophia Mukantabana, Eugene Ndayambaje, Valens Kanakuze, Alphonsine Mukangabire and Theobald Ndayiringiye, will be representing Ripple Effect, joining people working across Africa’s food systems to share ideas, learning and experience.

Food security, climate resilience, sustainable agriculture and stronger livelihoods for smallholder farmers are all part of the conversation. They’re also at the heart of the work we do alongside farming communities every day.

Convened by AGRA and Africa Food Systems Forum, the week will bring together farmers, policymakers, researchers, investors and organisations from across the continent.

Every number represents people creating lasting change in their own lives and communities, and we're proud to be part of that journey.

Young people aren’t waiting around for things to change.

Across the rural communities where we work, young people are learning practical farming and business skills, starting their own enterprises and creating new opportunities for themselves and their families.

In Uganda alone, our youth-focused dairy work has reached more than 63,000 young people, supporting them to build skills, earn an income and take a more active role in their communities.

And through Village Savings and Loan Associations, young people are saving together and accessing money they can invest in their farms and businesses.

This International Youth Day, we’re celebrating their ideas, ambition and the role they’re playing in shaping the future of rural communities.
