Fashion Museum Bath reaches key milestone
With planning permission recently granted by B&NES Council, the Lib Dem administration’s ambitious flagship project to build a world-class museum in the city centre is proceeding from vision to delivery.
Fashion Museum Bath will be the new home of one of the world’s greatest fashion collections, in what will be one of the UK’s most ambitious cultural projects. Lib Dem Councillor Paul Roper, Cabinet Member for Economic & Cultural Sustainable Development, B&NES Council, said:
“Securing planning permission for Fashion Museum Bath is a landmark moment for our city. This project is much more than a new museum: it is a transformative investment in Bath’s cultural future, bringing new life to historic buildings, creating inspiring spaces for learning and creativity, and ensuring that this world class collection can be enjoyed by generations to come. It is what our city, our local authority and the West of England region deserve.”
With about 250,000 visitors expected each year, Fashion Museum Bath will strengthen the area’s cultural economy, supporting skills, learning and creativity, and further reinforce Bath’s international reputation as a hub for heritage, culture and the creative industries.
B&NES Council has pledged £20 million to support the new Museum which is anticipated to cost £39 million. The West of England Combined Mayoral Authority granted initial funding of £1.75 million this year, building on a previous grant of £1.5 million. The National Lottery Heritage Fund has also supported the project with funding of £768,000 to progress plans for the museum’s development. Construction for Fashion Museum Bath is expected to start in winter 2027, ahead of its target opening date of December 2030.
