Football can be about more than sport. It can create connection, confidence and belonging.

We are continuing our exploration of the projects featured in our Annual Report for London's Community Sport Team 2025-26.

Our latest Spotlight explores the Queens Park Rangers Community Trust Football Project, funded by the Mayor of London and The Football Association, which created safe, female-led football sessions for women and girls from refugee and asylum-seeking backgrounds.

Participants described increased confidence, improved wellbeing and opportunities to build friendships in a supportive environment.

We are pleased to share our latest Annual Report for the Mayor of London’s Community Sport Team 2025-26.

This report explores what works in community sport for young Londoners, drawing together evidence from programmes across London to show how community sport can:
• build confidence and resilience
• improve wellbeing and mental health
• strengthen belonging and relationships
• create pathways into education, training and work

Community sport plays a vital role in supporting young people’s lives beyond physical activity alone. The findings in this report reinforce the importance of investing in approaches that are locally rooted, inclusive and designed around young people’s needs and strengths.

What happens when different generations come together to talk about care?

This resource is a product of the Older People’s Sounding Board, that we facilitate for NHS England, meeting the Youth Forum. Coproduced with both generations, it highlights practical ways to improve care, access and wellbeing.

NDTi has recently began working with the Electoral Commission to look into the reasons that young people with additional needs are not voting. We decided that the best way to tackle this was to start with young people themselves and try to understand why they might not vote.

Using our existing networks of young people through the Youth Inclusion Champions, Peer Support and Internship Works we gathered a group of eight young people with additional needs to work with us on a paid basis.

We met twice a month online to talk about voting, why young people might not vote and what could be do to help make this better.

The group where very engaged with this work and highlighted a lot of areas that they feel were real barriers to voting. Some of these included practical issues such as the complexity of registering to vote, to more complex issues about why it matters.

Through this group we then developed seven resources for use in schools which aim to address the issues the group had identified. Every resource was thoroughly checked by the group to make sure it addressed the issues.

These resources are now being tested in schools from September, with the idea of getting feedback from young people and teachers to help improve them further.

The Guardian has highlighted the growing crisis in the learning disability nursing workforce. A reported one third reduction in NHS learning disability nurses since 2009 is leaving many people without the specialist support they need.

At NDTi, we know how vital learning disability nurses are. Their expertise underpins safe, person centred, rights based care which helps tackle the significant health inequalities faced by people with learning disabilities.

Our work with NHS England and partners explores the unique role, skills and impact of learning disability nurses and amplifies the voices of practitioners, people with a learning disability and families. It also challenges us all to better understand, value and strengthen the profession.
