Historic Barton upon Humber

Barton upon Humber is a historic market town in North Lincolnshire on the south bank of the River Humber and is often described as being the jewel in North Lincolnshire’s crown. A Museum Resilience Grant has seen the birth of Past Forward, a project that aims to increase awareness of all the town has to offer, from its many notable buildings, to its three accredited museums as well as developing a brand that is unique to Barton.

Easter may feel like a distant memory, but this rabbit mould certainly caught the eye of our archive volunteers!

They’re very keen to give it a try—though don’t worry, they won’t be using it to make their blancmange anytime soon!

Have you ever used anything like this in your kitchen?

Who doesn’t love great ice cream?

At our April Step Back in Time session, wonderful memories were shared of Havercroft’s ice cream being delivered around the neighbourhood—first by horse and cart, and later by Mr Havercroft himself on his bike.

It’s amazing how something as simple as an ice cream delivery can bring back such vivid moments of community life.

Do you remember Havercroft’s, or other local favourites from years gone by? We’d love to hear your stories!

Do you remember the demolition of Rowleys?
Can you recognise the location?
At our April Step Back in Time session, we explored how shops and the high street have changed over the years - and this sparked plenty of memories.
We’d love to hear yours!

Anyone for tea? We love this old pewter teapot which was part of the deaccession from the D.H. Lawrence Museum. It is believed to be from the 1950s, although some brief research has shown it is probably a little older than that!

Who doesn’t love taking a look at the contents of an old box? We certainly do in the Barton Archives! Especially when you open an old first aid box and find lots of ephemera inside. Even the smell evokes some strong memories.

Here’s an interesting find from the Barton Archives.

These traditional cast-iron irons were typically heated on a stove or by loading them with hot coals.

We love this fascinating picture of WJ Bennett – no prizes for guessing what this shop sold!
