It’s Shared Lives Week 2026! 🌟

Our Shared Lives Scheme was featured on ITV this week, with the wonderful Rosie and Bernie sharing their experiences on the Sharp End programme and the evening news.

Thank you to Rosie, Bernie and everyone involved for helping shine a light on the positive impact Shared Lives can have! πŸŽ₯✨

A huge thank you to all of our amazing Shared Lives carers for the care, support and opportunities they provide every day πŸ™Œ

We dropped by the steel signing ceremony at St Richard Gwyn Catholic High School to see first-hand how work is progressing on the school's major redevelopment πŸ—οΈ

The event marked an important milestone for the project, with representatives signing one of the steel beams that will form part of the new school building.

Once complete, the development will provide modern learning spaces for more than 1,100 pupils, including dedicated ALN facilities, a 3G sports pitch and a Multi-Use Games Area that will also be available for community use, and sustainable features such as solar tech and eco-friendly materials that support our Project Zero ambitions πŸ₯ŽπŸŒ³πŸ“š

This is the final phase in the transformation of Barry's four comprehensive schools and another exciting step towards delivering state-of-the-art facilities for future generations πŸš€

Work on the new school building is expected to be completed by next year πŸ“…

Today (16th June) marks World Refill Day πŸ’§

The day aims to encourage us all to shift from single use plastics to refill and reuse systems β›²

It's a great reminder that small changes can make a difference. One easy swap? Taking a reusable water bottle with you when you're out and about this summer.

Not sure where you can top it up? The Refill Return app shows all the Vale's refill points, including public water fountains and local cafΓ©s and restaurants offering free water refills πŸ‘‡

Former Ysgol y Deri headteacher, Chris Britten, has been awarded an MBE for exceptional dedication to educational servicesπŸ†

His career has spanned involvement in each level and sector of education showcasing his commitment. Under his leadership, Ysgol y Deri gained attention, notably seen in the BBC documentary series A Special School, which showcased the achievements and experiences of pupils with additional learning needs (ALNs) πŸŽ“

A huge congratulations to Mr Britten for this exciting and remarkable achievement. Seeing local people recognised for their enthusiasm and dedication to specific causes will always be celebrated from us at the Council. Llongyfarchiadau! πŸ‘

Penarth is looking sparkling! ✨

Over the past few weeks, our Street Scene team has been hard at work carrying out a range of improvements to help keep Penarth looking its best πŸ™Œ

So far, they've πŸ‘‡

🚧 Repaired damaged paving slabs
🧼 Jet washed paving areas
🚫 Removed graffiti
🎨 Refreshed the roundabout
🚧 Replaced damaged bollards
πŸͺ§ Cleaned road signs
πŸš— Resurfaced Windsor Road and added new road markings

Underway πŸ‘‡

🎨 Repainting lighting columns along Windsor Road and Stanwell Road
πŸ›  Repairing, replacing and repainting railings where needed
⚑ Painting electrical boxes
🌱 De-weeding throughout the town centre
🚸 Repainting pedestrian crossings
πŸ—‘ Replacing bins with new on-street recycling bins
πŸͺ‘ New benches have been ordered and will be installed as soon as they arrive

Now most of the town centre work is complete, the team will be making their way from the town centre down towards Station Approach, where work will continue over the next week.

A huge shout-out to our Street Scene team for all their hard work delivering these improvements across Penarth πŸ‘

A big thank you also goes to our Creative Communities team and Penarth Town Council for helping turn the community's aspirations for the town centre into a placemaking plan that's now delivering visible change πŸ™Œ

Once work in Penarth is complete, you'll start to see our teams making their way to Cowbridge, Barry, and Llantwit Major next πŸš›πŸ‘€

It's Great Big Green Week πŸŒβ™»οΈ

As part of its Great Big Green Week coverage, ITV Wales featured our soft plastics recycling service on last night's evening bulletin πŸ“Ί

The report followed one of our waste crews in Barry before visiting our Waste Transfer Station on Atlantic Trading Estate to see how collected soft plastics are sorted and processed.

The Vale of Glamorgan was one of only two local authorities in Wales selected by WRAP Cymru to trial soft plastics recycling - and we're now the only Welsh local authority to roll the service out county-wide! πŸ‘

A huge thank you to our fantastic waste and recycling teams for helping make the scheme such a success.

But the biggest thank you goes to Vale residents πŸ™Œ The success of the scheme is down to everyone using it correctly. Household soft plastics are no longer being processed with black bag waste - instead, they are being recycled and reprocessed into new products ♻️
