Ready for another behind the scenes look at Barrington Court for Great Big Green Week? 🌿
When it came time to replace our fuel-powered kit, switching to battery power was an easy choice. From strimmers to mowers and leaf blowers, going electric means less noise and no fumes – better for both the garden team and the wildlife that call these gardens home.
Safe to say, the team are big fans 💚
We even added a battery-powered ride-on mower to the fleet. It’s quieter and cleaner, but also quicker to use (no collection box!), giving us more time to focus on caring for the garden.

Just because it’s called Great Big Green Week, it doesn’t mean every action has to be Great and Big. In the kitchen garden, you’ll see fallen fruit left for wildlife to enjoy. A tiny change, but it can make a huge difference 🍎🫐

Behind-the-scenes, we use a Biomass boiler to sustainably heat our two mansion houses, Court House and Strode House. Installed in 2016, these boilers heat water by burning natural fuels (in our case, wood pellets), which produces hot water, instead of relying on unsustainable fossil fuels. 🌿🪵
Our wood pellets are sustainably sourced by a local provider and are made from sawmill by-products, meaning no trees are felled solely for pellet production. This enables sustainable conservation heating of our buildings, as well as comfort heating on chilly days and hot water for our sinks.
The boiler itself is tucked away in a staff-only area, so while visitors don’t see it in action, you can definitely feel the difference – especially on a cold day at Barrington Court! 🔒🔥

This week at Barrington Court we’re celebrating Great Big Green Week! 🌿

This year’s theme is Together for Good, and everything we’re doing here is a collective effort to help make Barrington Court more environmentally friendly and sustainable for wildlife, the planet, and all of you. We’ll be sharing with you every day this week a different step we’ve taken, and we’d love to hear from you the steps that you’re taking in your life too. 🌎

First up, we’ve got the long orchard grass. This is left specifically for the benefit of wildlife. Long grass provides food, shelter, and breeding grounds for all sorts of insects and animals whilst also allowing wildflowers to flourish. Why not take a look on your next visit? 🍃🌱

Let’s take a little wander through the roses at Barrington Court 🌹✨

With so many varieties growing in different corners of the garden, each one has its own way of blooming – from the sun soaked roses climbing the warm south facing walls of the bus stalls, to the arching beauties overhead, to the calm elegance of the rose and iris garden.

Because they all grow at their own pace, there’s always something new to spot whenever you visit 🌿💛

These were filmed just last week… and we’ll be back in a month or so to see how they’re getting on.
Come see what’s blooming next time you’re here 🌸

🌿 If you love bearded irises – these big, frilly beauties – here are some tips from our garden team. Many bearded irises are wonderfully scented, so plant them somewhere you can pause and take a deep breath to enjoy them fully 💛
Choose a sunny spot with free draining soil, and make sure the rhizomes sit on top of the soil. They like to be baked by the sun to give you reliable flowers the following year ☀️
A little care goes a long way:
• Deadhead to stop the plant putting energy into seed.
• Divide every 3–4 years to prevent congestion.
• Remove any rotten rhizomes, and if you end up with more than you need… share the joy with friends 😊
You can see beautiful Bearded Irises in bloom here at Barrington Court, so keep an eye out on your next visit! 🌸
