I find Zack Polanski’s stance on this matter abhorrent. He is the leader of a political party and is using his position to criticise the police for doing their job and protecting the public from a man wielding a knife. A man who had previously been sentenced to 9 years in prison for stabbing a police officer and his dog. A man who had just stabbed two men going about their lives on the streets of London, just because they were Jewish.

With the Fremington by-election coming up next week, we asked Sue Kingdom, our Conservative candidate, for her thoughts on the recent Holiday Tax proposed by the Liberal Democrats and now adopted by the Government:

"Too many see Business as a piggy-bank - but the prosperity of everyone depends on it thriving. Ed Davey, leader of the Lib-Dems, has persuaded the Government to allow councils to levy a 5% tax on holiday makers! He does not seem to understand that taxing something means less of it. In an Area like Devon, where so many jobs depend upon tourism, this is the last thing we need."

Sue feels the Lib Dems have a blind-spot when it comes to the needs of businesses:

"Recently, the Conservative group forced the Lib-Dem controlled Council into a U-turn on closure of its trade waste collection service. This would have piled yet more costs onto a local business community already reeling from NI and minimum wage increases, costing local people their jobs. I will work to ensure the voice of Business is heard and that jobs are not put at risk by poorly thought-through schemes.

Only the Conservatives support Business and support job creation"

The government has just given its support to the Liberal Democrat’s proposal, to give local authorities the ability to charge a tax on people holidaying in the UK.
In North Devon we rely heavily on tourism for our local economy. Many people in this area are employed in the industry and pubs and restaurants need the business that tourists bring.
It has already become very expensive to holiday in this country due to rising costs of absolutely everything! If local councils decide to tax visitors, it might just be the tipping point to stop people coming here and the knock on effect would be devastating. I really hope that the local Lib Dem’s, who control both councils, do not choose to impose this tax!

Our County Councillor for Combe Martin Rural, Cllr Andrea Davis, getting stuck in with some drain clearing today with her Neighbourhood Highways Officer.
Liberal Democrat Councillors have been posing next to repaired potholes this week. Conservative Councillors get stuck in and help! Andrea doesn’t have a FB page and wouldn’t usually show off her skills, but we thought she deserved a bit of credit. She has served residents of Combe Martin Rural for over 20 years and quietly gets things done. As former Cabinet member for Transport and the Environment, Andrea brought funding for major road and transport projects to Devon. We think she’s a star! ⭐️
