You don't have to be married or own your own home to foster.

Many people are surprised to learn that foster carers come from all walks of life. Whether you're single, married, in a relationship, divorced, renting or own your home, you could still be eligible to foster.

What matters most isn't your relationship status or whether you own your property. It's your ability to provide a safe, stable and caring home where a child can thrive.

At Fostering Barnsley, we're looking for people with patience, commitment and a desire to make a difference in a child's life.

This week, we're introducing Eleanor, one of our dedicated Assessing Social Workers at Fostering Barnsley.

With 4 years' experience within our fostering team, Eleanor supports people through their fostering assessment journey, helping them take the first steps towards making a difference in a child's life.

MYTH: You have to be young to foster.

✅ FACT: As long as you're over the age of 21, you can foster. There is no upper age limit.

At Fostering Barnsley, we know that great foster carers come from all backgrounds and age groups. In fact, life experience, patience and stability can be valuable qualities when caring for children and young people.

Whether you're in your 20s, 50s, 60s or beyond, what matters most is your ability to provide a safe, loving and supportive home.

💜 How Do I Become a Foster Carer? 💜

If you've ever thought about fostering, the process may be simpler than you think.

📞 Get in touch
Start with an informal conversation with our friendly team. We'll answer any questions and help you decide whether fostering could be right for you.

🏡 Home visit
We'll visit you at home to get to know you, discuss your circumstances and explain the fostering journey in more detail.

📝 Assessment
An Assessing Social Worker will complete a fostering assessment with you, exploring your experience, strengths and suitability to foster.

🤝 Fostering Panel
Your assessment will be presented to an independent fostering panel, who will make a recommendation regarding your approval.

✅ Approval
The Agency Decision Maker reviews the panel's recommendation and makes the final decision on your approval as a foster carer.

Throughout the entire process, our team will be there to guide and support you every step of the way. The whole process takes around 4-6 months.
