🚨 May Round-Up 🚨

May has been an exceptionally busy month for Bangor Coastguard Rescue Team, with our volunteers responding to 27 callouts across the month.

From assisting people in difficulty along the coastline to supporting our emergency service partners, our team has been on hand day and night to help keep people safe.

As we head into the busier summer season, we’d like to remind everyone planning a visit to the coast to stay safe:

🌊 Check the weather forecast and tide times before setting out.
📱 Carry a fully charged mobile phone and let someone know your plans.
🥾 Wear suitable clothing and footwear for the conditions.
⚠️ Stay well back from cliff edges and be aware of unstable ground.
🏊 Never underestimate the sea.
📞 In a coastal emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Thank you to our volunteers, partner agencies and the public for your continued support.

Arhoswch yn ddiogel a mwynhewch ein harfordir hardd yn gyfrifol. Stay safe and enjoy our beautiful coastline responsibly.

A busy week for the team with 9 callouts attended across our coastline.

One of those shouts saw assisting a broken-down vessel on the Menai Strait, working alongside partner agencies to help bring everyone safely ashore.

If you are in danger or see someone in trouble at the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Found yourself accidentally stuck in mud while walking along the beach? 🥾

Sit back and spread your weight evenly across the surface to avoid sinking further.

If you can, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Alternatively, wave to attract attention and get someone to call for help.

NEVER FORGOTTEN

Late on the night of 13 March 2017, at approximately 10:30pm, the crew of the Irish Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 116 were tasked from their base at Dublin Airport.

They were deployed to assist their sister aircraft, Rescue 118, which was responding to a casualty more than 100 nautical miles west of Achill Island.

On board Rescue 116 were Captain Dara Fitzpatrick, Captain Mark Duffy, Winchman Paul Ormsby, and Winch Operator Ciarán Smith.

Tragically, they would never complete their mission.

At approximately 12:46am on 14 March, Rescue 116 went down near Black Rock, north of Achill Island and west of Belmullet. All four crew members lost their lives in the line of duty. Dara and Mark were later returned to their families, while Paul and Ciarán remain lost at sea.

Tonight we remember their courage, dedication, and sacrifice. Our thoughts remain with their families, friends, and colleagues.

Those involved in search and rescue never set out expecting not to return home. The drive to help those in need is simply part of who we are.

For one minute tonight, step outside, stand in silence, look to the sky, and remember their bravery.

Go Mhairdis Beo. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a n-anamacha.

Today the team, along with Penmon Coastguard Rescue Team, visited the Bristow Coastguard helicopter base at Caernarfon Airport for aircraft familiarisation on the new AW139 helicopter. It was great to catch up with the crew. Caernarfon Airport is now beginning operations with the first of the new HM Coastguard AW139 helicopters as part of the transition from the current Sikorsky S-92 fleet. 🚁

Coastguard rescue teams from across North Wales, together with crew members from the Caernarfon search and rescue helicopter, attended a special screening of the second series of SOS Extreme Rescues at Galeri Caernarfon.

All those attending had taken part in the filming of the second series, and the event served to thank them for their involvement and celebrate its success.

SOS Extreme Rescues follows the incredible work of HM Coastguard and partner emergency services as they come to people’s aid across the stunning coastlines and dramatic mountains of Eryri (Snowdonia).

Angie Bosley from Barmouth Coastguard Rescue Team said, “It was a great reminder of the importance of collaboration and the impact of what we do. The screening really captured that spirit, and it was lovely to celebrate it together.”
