1557 (Friars School) Squadron Air Training Corps

1557 (Friars School) Squadron Air Training Corps Accepting young people from age 12 but must be in Year8. Adult volunteers must be 20 years of age and will be subject to DBS checks.

1557 (Friars School) Squadron is the local RAF Air Cadet unit for Bangor, North Wales and the surrounding area. Our Squadron was originally established in 1942 as part of Friars School, but is now open for anyone aged between 12 (must be in Year 8) and 17 (boys and girls) to join. As a squadron we meet twice a week at a building dedicated entirely to our use. On parade nights we enjoy activities s

uch as leadership and team building exercises and training in activities such as first aid, navigation and camp craft. Throughout the year, our cadets also get the chance to participate in adventurous activities such as climbing, kayaking, hill walking, expeditions, flying, gliding and communications exercises. We also are happy to accept adult volunteers (aged 20 and over) who wish to “give something back” to the community. While many former cadets return to the organisation previous experience is not required. ALL our adult volunteers are security checked before appointment. Not every member of staff is expected to follow a uniformed route; our Civilian Instructors are the backbone of a Squadron. Any commitment is purely as your circumstances allow. Additionally we have our Squadron Civilian Committee working behind the scenes if that is more your cup of tea. For futher details please email: [email protected]

Congratulations to Caitlin Bailey upon successfully passing her Board and being appointed Cadet Warrant Officer.
It’s been too long since we last had a cadet of that rank!

A bittersweet day as we bid a sad farewell to our friend and colleague Vaughan Prytherch.
Not only was he Chaplain to us at 1557 (Friars School) Squadron, he was also a highly decorated Knight Commander with St John’s Ambulance Brigade.
Members of Gorsedd y Beirdd may have known him as Fychan ap Prytherch where his rich vocabulary would have put many to shame.
With a finger in so many voluntary and charitable pies Vaughan has left a huge impression on the people he worked with.
His loss will be deeply felt for time to come.

Following the gradual deterioration of our Squadron building at Ysgol Friars, we’ve taken temporary accommodation at Dale Street in Menai Bridge, between the Catholic Church and The Freckled Angel Bar, which many will remember as Ruby’s!
We hope to return to new premises in Bangor around Christmas 2025.

The Squadron headquarters at Ysgol Friars (Upper Friars) has finally been condemned since it replaced the original portacabin in October 1998.
For the next 12-18 months we'll be residing at Dale Street in Menai Bridge.
