📢 Oxfordshire's Liberal Democrat-run County Council wants to close 14 rural roads to through traffic, cutting speed limits from 60mph to 20mph and installing gates and bollards to keep drivers out.

These rural roads are essential for residents, farmers, tradespeople and businesses that depend on every day. Shutting them down does not make the problem disappear, it pushes traffic onto other roads, through other villages, and onto other communities.

The answer to road safety is better infrastructure. Improved surfaces, proper signage, meaningful enforcement. Not locking drivers out of the countryside and hoping they go away.

The Liberal Democrats need to stop blaming drivers for problems that their own failure to invest in infrastructure has caused. North Oxfordshire Conservatives will continue to stand up for rural residents who rely on these roads.

🏟️ Oxford United Stadium Update

The judicial review brought by Friends of Stratfield Brake is deeply disappointing, but not entirely surprising.

Let’s be absolutely clear: Oxford United’s new stadium application has been one of the most scrutinised, detailed and rigorously assessed planning applications I have ever seen. Time and time again, the Club was required to provide further evidence, undertake additional studies, answer questions, address concerns and jump through countless hoops. Every stage of the process was examined in extraordinary detail.

After years of consultation, professional assessment and democratic scrutiny, Cherwell District Council planning committee made its decision and granted planning permission. That decision was not taken lightly. It followed extensive consideration by planning officers, experts and elected councillors who weighed all of the evidence before them.

Now, a small group of individuals are seeking to overturn that democratic decision through the courts. While everyone has the right to pursue legal avenues available to them, it is important to recognise what is at stake. Continued delays create uncertainty for the Club, its supporters, local businesses and the wider community that stands to benefit from this once-in-a-generation investment.

Oxford United has confirmed it will robustly defend the decision alongside Cherwell District Council, and both parties have requested that the High Court expedites the case so that unnecessary delays can be minimised.

I remain firmly supportive of the new stadium project. It will secure Oxford United’s long-term future, bring significant economic benefits to the area, create jobs, improve sporting facilities and deliver substantial investment into our local communities.

The planning process has been followed. The evidence has been examined. The decision has been made democratically.

It is now time to allow that decision to move forward.

Today’s meeting at County Hall should never have been necessary. Councillors were called back for a single-item meeting because the Liberal Democrats failed to get their own house in order.

Liberal Democrat members knew during last Tuesday’s council meeting that their leader would resign later that day, yet chose not to be open with fellow councillors or the public. That shows a lack of respect for this council and for taxpayers.

While we congratulate Cllr Tim Bearder on his election as Leader of the Council, the Conservative and Independent councillors of the Oxfordshire Alliance group will continue to hold this Lib Dem administration to account on their failure to deal with potholes, transport failures, their unpopular tips booking system, and their anti-motorist policies that are damaging Oxford and our rural communities.

The wheels seem to be coming off at County Hall - perhaps they’ve hit a pothole? 🕳️

We can but hope that Cllr Gant’s resignation will provide an opportunity for a change of course. In recent years he has led the Lib Dem charge on the Oxford Congestion Charge, blanket 20mph limits, and zero emissions zones. Changes have been introduced after ignoring their own consultation results whilst the county’s pot hole crisis continues.

This resignation comes just days after the council formally moved into “No Overall Control” - not because of local elections but because so many councillors have left the Lib Dem group in recent weeks.

From the outside it’s impossible to know how many of those defections are because of the council’s failings in highways matters (such as the Milton Interchange which had the road markings repainted three times in as many weeks); the failure to adopt new housing estates, plans to turn off street lights; or the unpopular booking system at our rubbish tips that will lead to more fly-tipping.

Residents deserve better!
