"๐ ๐ฆ๐ธ๐ถ๐ฝ ๐ ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐น๐ ๐ฆ๐ผ ๐ ๐ ๐๐ถ๐ฑ๐ ๐๐ฎ๐ป ๐๐ฎ๐". An all too familiar reality that some of our neighbours and resident in our ward face on a daily. You would be shocked to know some haven't eaten a proper meal in three days.๐
"The kids need to eat. I can stretch ยฃ20 if it's just for them. Food bank helps, but it's embarrassing. I'm working full-time. I shouldn't need this." ๐
7.5 million people in the UK live in food-insecure households. That's 1 in 9 of us. In Hardwick, it's happening on streets you walk past every day.๐

Let me be clear about food support available: ๐
โ
St Francis Church Foodbank (Thursdays 10am-12pm & 6pm-8pm), voucher required
โ
St Francis Community Drop-In (Tuesdays 11am-3:30pm) - includes take-away lunch
That's it! Two days per week. One location.
No community fridge. No food pantry. No cooking classes. No community garden๐ซ. Compare that to other areas with multiple food pantries, community fridges open 7 days/week, cooking skills programmes and community gardens.

Foodbanks are emergency provision. They're vital, but they're not a solution. Here's why:
โ ๐ฆ๐๐ถ๐ด๐บ๐ฎ - many people won't use them even when desperate
โ ๐๐ถ๐บ๐ถ๐๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐ผ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ป๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ต๐ผ๐๐ฟ๐ - if you work shifts, you're excluded
โ ๐ฉ๐ผ๐๐ฐ๐ต๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐๐๐๐๐ฒ๐บ - you need referral from GP/social worker/councillor
โ ๐ก๐ผ ๐ฐ๐ต๐ผ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฒ - you get what's donated, not what you need
โ ๐ง๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐๐ ๐๐๐บ๐ฝ๐๐ผ๐บ๐, ๐ป๐ผ๐ ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐๐๐ฒ๐ and doesn't address why people can't afford food

โ๏ธCommunity Pantries - members pay ยฃ3-ยฃ5 a week for ยฃ15-ยฃ20 of food, choosing what they need. Run by volunteers, councilโsupported. Successful in Tower Hamlets, Merton, Bradford, Nottingham.
Community Fridges - open to all, redistributing surplus food from supermarkets and cafรฉs. Merton saved 27 tonnes of food (~ 58 600 meals).
โ๏ธCommunity Gardens & Cooking Classes โ teach growing and cooking skills, reduce isolation, and build resilience.

District councils do have tools to support food security, especially when they work with community groups, churches, businesses and charities. These are models that already operate in other parts of the UK and could be explored for Hardwick.
I will explore the feasibility of CDC working with local partners to set up a daily/bi-weekly community pantry at a selected community venue:
โ
Lowโcost weekly membership, with food worth several times that amount
โ
Choiceโbased model where people shop, not just receive parcels
โ
Run by volunteers, with council and charity support for venue and coordination
โ
Stocked through surplus food schemes and local supermarkets
Similar pantries already run successfully in places like Tower Hamlets, Merton, Bradford and Nottingham. The exact cost and scale here would depend on partners, funding and demand.
Across Hardwick, we currently have very limited local food support. I would explore community fridges at vantage locations across the ward, working with council, residents and local businesses/partners:
โ
Open access to surplus food that would otherwise go to waste
โ
No vouchers, no meansโtesting
โ
Hosted in an existing community venue, if agreed
โ
Funding could come from a mix of council budgets, grants and where appropriate, developer contributions.
I will push for free or lowโcost cooking sessions in Hardwick, delivered with Public Health, adult learning or local charities:
โ
Budgetโfriendly, nutritious meals
โ
Batch cooking and food storage skills
โ
Hosted regularly at a Hardwick Community venue
These programmes already run in other parts of the country; the question locally is who delivers them and how often, not whether theyโre possible.
I will explore options for more community growing:
โ
Additional allotment capacity where thereโs demand and land
โ
Links with local schools so children can learn about growing and cooking
This would likely rely on a mix of S.106 funding, small grants and volunteer effort and would need proper site and cost assessment.
Many families donโt know about schemes like the Household Support Fund or local welfare assistance. I will push for:
โ
Clear information at foodbanks, schools, GP surgeries and online
โ
Simple, jargonโfree guidance on how to apply
โ
Working with advice agencies to make sure people arenโt missing out
This is lowโcost, practical and well within what councils can do. People can't access help they don't know exists.

Food-secure families: ๐
Have better health outcomes, less NHS burden
Perform better at work/school boosting economic productivity
Experience less mental health crisis which reduces social care costs
Stay in their homes thereby preventing homelessness
