A group of French soldiers held in a World War 1 German prison camp must concoct a plan to escape from their high-security fortress. They are under the watchful eye of aristocratic German officer von Rauffenstein, but he has formed an unexpected bond with one of them.

Orson Welles famously held Jean Renoir's La Grande Illusion in the highest regard, often stating it was one of the few films he would take with him "on the ark" to save for posterity. He considered a masterpiece, often mentioning it alongside his own favourite films and praising its humanistic approach to cinema
