Yesterday a couple of red squirrels were putting on a show as we pulled up into Balmaha visitor centre carpark. They were grabbing hazelnuts from a tree by the entrance of the visitor centre and running off to cache them nearby. We spoke to a LLTNP member of staff who said that red squirrels were often seen around the visitor centre and that they appeared to be increasing in numbers in this area. Here are a couple of photos of them in action!

Fantastic work Sam, what a discovery 🙌

One of our volunteers at RSPB Scotland Loch Lomond has found a wasp that has never been recorded in Scotland before! Sam Buckton, a recent zoology graduate from the University of Cambridge, set himself the challenge of finding and recording 250 new species for the reserve this summer, but he has now found 315 (and counting). Some of the species he’s discovered are scarce in Scotland, at least one is a first for the area, and many have never been recorded on any of the RSPB’s 200 nature reserves before. Many species, particularly invertebrates, are under-recorded across the UK, but even common wildlife is regularly overlooked. This means that dramatic declines, such as those seen in recent years with house sparrows and bumblebees, can take time to come to light. Thanks for all your hard work, Sam, and here's to 500 new species!! The Herald have more on this story here: https://www.heraldscotland.com/news/17786822.move-midge-39-s-new-beastie-scotland/
