The stolen Somme Memorial flags are safely back in Ballymena — but attention has now turned to the cross-community efforts behind their recovery.

Jon Burrows MLA has praised cooperation which helped bring about the positive outcome, while Cllr Rodney Quigley has confirmed the next step before the flags can once again fly at the Queen Street memorial.

This is very sad news. Stephen was a wonderful journalist, a fine author and a trusted voice who commanded respect across communities and political divides. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and former colleagues. Taken far too soon.

During a high-profile career at the BBC for three decades, he was an investigative reporter on the Spotlight programme, as well as being both London correspondent and political correspondent.

Hard power versus hot air - you’re very welcome in Belfast - HMS St Albans.

This submarine-hunting frigate represents far more than an impressive Royal Navy presence in Belfast. Her crew help protect every part of the United Kingdom - and provide a security umbrella from which the Republic of Ireland also benefits.

The threats beneath our seas are real. The vital undersea cables connecting these islands with the United States and the wider world carry communications and economic activity upon which millions of people depend. Protecting them is essential to our security and prosperity.

The Royal Navy also plays an often unseen role in confronting organised crime and supporting operations against traffickers who seek to flood our communities with drugs.

Meanwhile, a Lasair Dhearg activist stood safely in front of this warship, filming and criticising those who serve. That is democracy: the freedom to denounce the very people whose service helps protect your right to do so.

In many of the regimes these republican revolutionaries romanticise, he would be imprisoned for far less. Here, he is free to produce another little video offering nothing but grievance, gestures and hot air.

While he performs for social media, the men and women of HMS St Albans are doing something real: protecting lives, defending our waters and helping to keep the whole of these islands safe.

My article in today’s Belfast Newsletter - I set out my vision of postive unionist leadership.

Unionism cannot simply defend the Union - we must strengthen it and leave it in a better place than we found it.

That means learning from past mistakes, thinking strategically and making a confident case for the security, prosperity and opportunity the Union provides.

Above all, we must make Northern Ireland work: creating good jobs, retaining our young people, improving public services and championing everything our country has to offer.

The future belongs to a unionism that is proud but persuasive, resolute but strategic, and ambitious for the generations to come.

I am delighted to have been chosen to represent the Ulster Unionist Party in Lisnasharragh at the next council election.

Lisnasharragh is my home, and it has given me so much. This is where I’ve chosen to build my life and start a family, and it has completely won my heart.

I’ve met some of the friendliest people I’ve ever known. I’ve got to know the people behind our local businesses, the volunteers who give up their time for this community, and the neighbours who make this such a brilliant part of Belfast to live in.

Unfortunately, I’ve seen plenty of problems too.

Our rates are going up, yet our streets are getting messier. Businesses and residents are being asked to pay more, while too often the basics aren’t being delivered as they should be.

I don’t think we should just accept that.

I want to represent you on Belfast City Council because I want to represent my home.

I want Lisnasharragh to be a place where our streets are clean, our businesses can thrive, our communities are listened to, and where people can be proud of where they live.

I’m looking forward to getting out across Lisnasharragh, listening to you, hearing what matters to you, and earning your support.

This is my home. I want to be a part of making it the best it can be.
