Really positive news for Ballymena and the skilled workforce at Wrightbus.

Greater Manchester has confirmed it will purchase 55 more electric buses built in Ballymena, bringing the total number of Wrightbus vehicles ordered for the Bee Network to 293.

It was good to speak with Andy Burnham at the Alliance Party Conference about the Bee Network and Greater Manchester’s plans to move to a fully electric bus fleet.

As the MLA for North Antrim, I’m always proud to champion the innovation and expertise in our local manufacturing sector. Orders like this support good local jobs and show how businesses in our area are helping drive the transition to cleaner transport across these islands.

I had the privilege of representing Causeway Coast and Glens at the British-Irish Parliamentary Assembly Committee on Peoples and Cultures Inquiry on Rural Housing this afternoon.

I was pleased to be part of a NILGA delegation alongside Councillor Tim McClelland (Armagh, Banbridge & Craigavon) and Cllr Caroline Devine (Derry City & Strabane), bringing the voice of local councils directly to parliamentarians from Westminster, the Houses of the Oireachtas, the Scottish Parliament, the Welsh Senedd, and the Northern Ireland Assembly.

Housing is one of the biggest issues (perhaps the biggest issue) facing our community.

I was proud to speak on behalf of residents across Causeway Coast and Glens about the very real pressures we are experiencing:
💧The limitations on development caused by insufficient wastewater infrastructure in many of our towns and villages
🏠The impact of second homes and short-term lets in our coastal communities and the challenge of managing essential tourism demand while protecting year-round communities
🚜Housing pressures facing farming families and those who have grown up in rural areas and simply want to remain there
💰The importance of local economic development in sustaining communities
🏡The needs of our ageing population and the importance of enabling people to age in place
🚆The expansion of commuter belts, remote working and the changing shape of rural life

These are not abstract policy debates. They affect whether young people can stay in the communities they were raised in, whether older residents can downsize locally, and whether our villages and coastal towns remain living, breathing communities all year round.

What struck me most was how common these challenges are. Representatives from across these islands are grappling with the same pressures. That makes cooperation essential. While the impact is local, the policy levers often sit at regional or national level, and joined-up thinking is the only way forward.

I was proud to raise the concerns of Causeway Coast and Glens at that level.

We are fortunate to live in an area people care deeply about. My focus remains clear: ensuring housing policy supports local people, sustains our distinctive communities, and allows the next generation to build their future here at home.

I will continue making that case, wherever I have the opportunity to do so.

We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of our dear friend David Reid, former Alliance Party councillor for the Braid DEA, following a long battle with cancer.

David was one of life’s truly remarkable people, relentlessly positive, even in the face of immense challenges. He never complained, instead channelling his experiences into making life better for others. From raising awareness of Crohn’s to championing early cancer detection and fighting tirelessly for better welfare support, David’s work left a lasting mark.

He will be deeply missed by us all. Our thoughts are with David’s family and friends at this incredibly sad time.

A rather damp day on the north Antrim coast, but that didn't stop Lee, Glenise and Kevin from taking a walk to deliver contact cards in Ballycastle. Great to see the flower bed at the top of the town rebuilt and replanted (now with an added Fairtrade sign), something raised with us by a number of residents in the area. And some issues with overgrown bushes noted and already reported to the Department for Infrastructure.

Our Alliance team in Ballymoney had a great time visiting the folks at Bytes last week.

I might be getting a TikTok masterclass soon… wish me luck! 🎥🙈

Last week, I joined Councillor Lee Kane at the Ballymoney hub of the brilliant Bytes North East Team.

They’re doing amazing work with vulnerable young people across Ballymoney, Coleraine and Mid Ulster, giving them a voice and helping them reach their full potential.

We talked about the real challenges facing young people, the youth work sector, and how to make politics relevant to young people in North Antrim.

They’ve also offered for their young people to train me up to become a TikTok pro (is that wise?), so watch this space...!
