🚶‍♂️ New scenic ‘High Route’ into Fort William now open 🥾

Walkers finishing the Way can now enjoy an even more memorable final stretch into Fort William, thanks to a newly created ‘High Route’.

Following feedback from walkers, The Highland Council’s Long-Distance Routes team developed the new route, which offers breathtaking views over the head of Loch Linnhe and surrounding hills.

Running 50–70 metres above Glen Nevis, it skirts part of Cow Hill before descending near Alma Road, just a short walk from the High Street and official finish point at Gordon Square, Fort William.

The original route will still be available, especially for those staying in Glen Nevis or Inverlochy.

Meteorological summer begins today and the Way is in full bloom! 🌸🌼🪻

The days continue to get longer until the solstice later this month, giving plenty of daylight hours to enjoy walking and being out in nature.

📸 If I would be a flower, I’d probably live somewhere along the West Highland Way. Look at those views! 🏞🏵

It's important to stay hydrated in the outdoors, but please ensure you use a trusted drinking water source - last week there were reports of an individual at Rowardennan becoming unwell, possibly due to drinking water from a local untreated source.

If you must drink from a natural water source, such as a burn or loch, it is essential to boil the water first to make it as safe as possible: water filters may not guarantee safe drinking water.

🚰Scottish Water Top Up Taps are available on the WHW at Milngavie, Drymen, Balmaha, Rowardennan, Crianlarich, Kinlochleven, Fort William & many businesses also offer drinking water taps for filling up.

As the weather warms up this week, please take extra care to avoid wildfires, which can devastate wildlife and local communities. We may enjoy the romantic idea of an open fire, but the reality is that these can quickly get out of control.

To prevent fire-related incidents, follow this advice from the Scottish Outdoor Access Code:

⚠ Do not light an open fire, including in fire bowls or BBQs, during times of high fire risk (prolonged periods of dry weather) or near forests, farmland, peaty ground, or close to buildings, or historic sites.
⚠ Always pay attention to fire danger warnings, information from the Scottish Fire & Rescue Service and follow all local advice.
🏕 If you need to, use a camping stove to cook your food. Place it on a level, non-flammable surface away from dry grass and vegetation (and your tent!) and keep a close watch while using it.
🗑When cleaning up, pick up any pieces of broken glass with the rest of your rubbish, as these act as a magnifying glass for the sun and can start fires. Also, take away cigarette ends as they can still ignite dry grass if left on the ground.
🌳Remember that deadwood provides a home and food for many creatures and is vital for the ecosystem. So, leave the wood on the ground and never cut down or damage trees.
🔥Report any out-of-control fires by calling 999 immediately.

His story reminds us how deeply people care about this route.
The roles we are recruiting include building greater support from people, communities and businesses who share that passion.
