If you’ve ever wanted to explore deeper into the hidden heart of the Haddon Estate, this is your opportunity. We have just a few spaces left on our Conservation & Heritage Walk on Thursday 24 September. This exclusive, full-day guided walk allows rare access to areas of the historic estate never usually open to the public.

Your guide, Jason, has decades of experience leading groups through some of the wildest landscapes on the planet. He and his team will take you through ancient woodland, sweeping parkland and quiet river valleys while sharing stories of Haddon Hall’s past, the creation of its medieval deer park, and how centuries-old land stewardship continues to shape the landscape today. Along the way, you’ll learn how to “read” the land – spotting wildlife signs, identifying trees, understanding habitat creation and woodland management. At a suitable halfway point, pause for lunch around a campfire sparked by literally rubbing two sticks together.

This is a rare opportunity for nature lovers, history enthusiasts, walkers and anyone curious about how landscapes are shaped and protected. The walk covers a distance of around 3-4 miles on uneven terrain.

Flowing from Buxton to Rowsley, the Derbyshire River Wye is a relatively short river of only 15 miles in length, but it is extremely special. Filtered predominately by limestone, the water is extremely clean and clear. As it runs through the Haddon Estate it is protected by our careful, organic management, and it provides the perfect habitat for a huge variety of birds, mammals, invertebrates and fish.

The first glimmers of autumn are now creeping into Haddon Medieval Park, with gold in the leaves and a softness in the light. Our swallows are leaving, the fruits are ripening on the trees and the mornings are noticeably cooler. The view of Haddon Hall and the Stables that greets visitors as they walk over the bridge is always beautiful in every season.

Goldfinch numbers have risen steadily in recent decades in the UK, and it's now a common sight to see charms of these pretty birds flitting from flower to flower in fields, verges and gardens. They are a conservation success story: their population has more than doubled since the 1970s, and around 1.2 million pairs are thought to breed across the UK each year. They are specialist seed feeders with fine beaks that are perfectly adapted to extracting seeds from thistles and teasels, and they particularly benefit if you are able to leave small areas of wildflowers standing to provide food for them in the winter months.

This Sunday we are delighted to welcome artist Judith Brown to Haddon Hall, to lead a Wire Sculpture Workshop in our Tudor Stables Studio. During this full-day workshop, which takes inspiration from the wildflowers in Haddon Medieval Park, you will learn how to craft delicate natural designs using wire, creating finished pieces to take home and treasure.

This is a mindful, relaxing art form, suitable for everyone over the age of 18. No previous experience is required, and all tuition, materials and equipment will be provided.

Allowing wildflowers to flourish in our meadows means that we can provide perfect habitats to support a wide range of pollinators. In total, 23 different species of bees have been recorded in Haddon Medieval Park, including the first records in the county of the wonderfully-named Big-headed Mining Bee (Andrena bucephala) and Hairy-horned Nomad Bee (Nomada hirtipes). We will continue to manage our parkland organically, hand in hand with nature, to ensure the future survival of all these vitally important insects.

We are proud to host a busy and varied events programme every year in Haddon Medieval Park. Designed to educate and inspire, our events are all connected with our ancient parkland, its landscapes or its wildlife. From specialist wildlife walks and parkland tours that teach visitors about our bird life, meadow life, river habitats, trees, wildflowers or bat roosts, to workshops that support endangered and heritage crafts, there's always the chance to learn more or develop a new skill here. Most events take place in a purpose-designed studio within our Tudor Stables (pictured), a comfortable and airy space with old stones, oak beams and its original manger.

We still have plenty of events available throughout autumn, but we will be releasing a brand new programme of events in early 2027. Please follow our social media accounts to find out more as soon as dates are released!

This year we are delighted to welcome back the experts at Woodland Ways to lead a Nalbinding Workshop in the Tudor Stables Studio at Haddon Hall.

On this full day heritage craft workshop you will create a beanie hat, perfectly fitted to you, using the ancient Scandinavian technique of Nalbinding, a craft that pre-dates knitting and crochet. Nalbinding involves using a single needle to create a fabric from short lengths of natural wool, resulting in dense, warm items that don’t unravel in the way that knitted items can. The Peak District has long had an association with wool, and we are pleased to help in continuing to protect and preserve these ancient crafts.

The peaceful Derbyshire River Wye makes the perfect setting for watching the wildlife that lives within the ancient landscape of Haddon Medieval Park. Iconic dippers love to perch on the rocks and search for insects and amphibians in the water, while the wildflower margins are full of butterflies, bees and damselflies.

"The Autumn Wreath Making course was delightful. Claire was an excellent teacher. She was skilled, creative, informative ,and patient with a clumsy, unimaginative beginner. I learnt so much and felt proud of my final creation!"

After the success of last year's event, we are delighted to be able to offer a further Autumn Wreath Making Workshop at Haddon this September. Taking inspiration from the flowers and foliage in our wild landscape, florist Claire Tew will teach you the skills needed to craft an entirely natural, sustainable wreath and weave in autumn flowers, dried blooms, leaves, seeds and branches. All tuition, materials and equipment will be provided and everyone will go home with a finished item to treasure.

Your ticket for this event also entitles you to half-price admission to Haddon Hall and its beautiful gardens on the same day.
