This week is 'Volunteers' Week' (1st-7th June), and we want to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to the thousands of volunteers who give their time across Rossendale.

We don’t just celebrate you this week. We see the difference you make all year round. Without the dedication, passion and commitment of local volunteers, so many opportunities in sport, physical activity and health simply wouldn’t happen.

And the numbers show it too. Since the Sport England Active Lives Survey began, volunteering in Rossendale has grown from 15,500 people in 2017 to 18,400 in 2025. That’s thousands more people stepping up to help their community.

These figures highlight something we already know: volunteers play an incredible role across the UK - and here in Rossendale, we’re proud of every single one of you.

Thank you for everything you do.💚

As part of the improvement works in Haslingden town centre, the original cobbles have been carefully lifted and reused across the area. Keeping and re‑using these materials helps protect the town’s character while also reducing waste.

It’s a small but important part of making the centre feel more welcoming and more “Haslingden” - a place people want to spend time, visit and support local businesses. Old and new working together, with the town’s heritage still firmly under our feet.

Haslingden Market has hit a big milestone... every unit is now filled following its recent transformation! 👏

The revamped space is now home to a mix of independent traders, including Sarah Greens Artisan Pies, Kardia Gifts, Rach’s Bakes, Posh Paws Rossendale, Wrapshack, Ripe Fruit and Veg, The Northern Kitchen, John Monks, Jack’s Creation Corner and VSMS pop‑up shop.

Open every Friday and Saturday, the market also runs themed events throughout the year, supporting local traders and bringing more people into the town centre.

If you haven’t been down recently, now’s a great time to visit and and show your support.

We've been working with local artists, including Jasper Howard, to create a series of arts-led signs in Waterfoot that celebrate the town's history, character and creativity. The pieces highlight places like Booth Fold, Gaghills Mill, Little Venice and The Thrutch, with stories developed alongside historian Stephen Oldfield.

📅 Launch event: Saturday 30th May, 3pm.
📍 Meet at Valley Artists’ Studios.

Join Stephen and the artists for a guided walk to explore the new Waterfoot signage as part of the Rossendale Art Trail. A chance to see the work up close and hear the stories behind it.

Huge congratulations to Rossendale Triathlon Club, who’ve been named North West Small Event of the Year at the Triathlon England Awards for their brilliant Rossendale Triathlon. 🏆

The judges praised the event for being an outstanding and inclusive event that works closely with the local community to deliver a positive and engaging experience for all involved.

The event is organised by a small team of five volunteers who put their heart into making the day memorable for everyone taking part. Nearly 20 years on, it continues to be one of the Valley’s standout community events.

💬Race Director Lee Cramp summed it up perfectly: "We are beyond proud to be recognised by Triathlon England. Being named Small Event of the Year validates everything we stand for: inclusivity, community, and the joy of taking part. Whether it’s supporting the Rossendale Rays, championing local businesses or seeing a first-timer cross the line, we do this to create memories that last a lifetime. We are honoured to put Rossendale on the national map."

A massive well done to everyone involved, a brilliant achievement for the club and for Rossendale. 👏

Our updated guidance for household extensions is now live. It sets out the key things we look at in planning applications, including design, scale, impact on neighbours and highway safety.

Rossendale has a new Mayor 👋

Cllr Liz McInnes has officially taken on the role of Mayor of Rossendale for 2026/27.

Cllr McInnes will be supporting three local charities during her mayoral year: Rossendale Hospice, M3 Project and Rossendale & Pendle Mountain Rescue.

At the Council's Annual Meeting on 22nd May, we also welcomed Cllr Samara Barnes as Deputy Mayor for civic events, and celebrated past Mayor, Mr Granville Morris, who has been made an Honorary Alderman after 18 years of service. The Mayor also thanked her partner, Steve Duxbury, for agreeing to be her consort throughout her Mayoral term.

We'd like to say a huge thank you to Cllr Michelle Smith for her outstanding year as Mayor. She undertook over 200 community engagements, and raised over £7,700 for local charities, a fantastic year spent proudly representing Rossendale.
