It’s Deaf Awareness Week and fire safety looks different for everyone.

If you are deaf or hard of hearing, a standard smoke alarm may not wake you.

You should consider a strobe light and vibrating-pad alarm system to alert you in the event of a fire.

We also offer free home fire safety checks across Lancashire. Deaf people or those with reduced sensory function are likely to receive a personal visit from our community fire safety team.

If you don’t meet the criteria for a home visit, you’ll still receive personalised advice to help keep you safe.

Drills…

In some cases we have to improvise and adapt.

Firefighters do drills because they help them stay prepared for real emergencies.
Drills allow firefighters to practice important skills, improve teamwork, and react quickly under pressure.
They also help firefighters learn how to use equipment properly and safely.
By repeating different emergency scenarios, firefighters build confidence and reduce mistakes, which can save lives and protect property during actual fires or rescues.

Open water can be far more dangerous than it appears.

Cold water shock can affect anyone, regardless of swimming ability, and can quickly impair breathing and movement.

If you enter the water unexpectedly, float on your back, focus on controlling your breathing, and call for help when able.

Is your toaster doubling as a storage spot?

Letters, receipts and school papers might seem harmless but they’re highly flammable and don’t belong anywhere near heat.

Keeping your toaster clear is a simple step that can help prevent a fire.

Keep your toaster clear and only use it for its intended purpose.

This recent fire, involving an extension lead and heater, is a reminder of how quickly electrical hazards can escalate.

A few simple checks could help prevent a similar incident in your home.

Top tips for staying safe:

✔ Check plugs, sockets and chargers regularly for burn marks, scorch marks or unusual smells.
✔ Charge devices on a solid, stable surface, never on beds or carpets.
✔ Don’t leave appliances running unattended or overnight.
✔ Turn off appliances when not in use, including washing machines, dishwashers, and heaters.
✔ Take extra care with e-cigarettes, e-bikes, and e-scooters, never charge them unsupervised.

A quick safety check today could make all the difference tomorrow.
