The breath-taking red-brick mansion and ancient yew hedges sit at the heart of a magnificent garden and historic park in the beautiful Bure meadows. The story of the estate unfolds over a thousand years. The landscape with its hedges and narrow tree-lined lanes has changed little over the centuries and is quintessentially Norfolk. Blickling’s owners have used the estate as a place of quiet refuge,

while playing their part on the world’s political stage. Philip Kerr, 11th Marquis of Lothian, left this estate to the National Trust in 1940, and he’s vital to its story. Without him, it’s unlikely that Blickling would still be around for you to explore, along with many other places that you love.

What happens when traditional Afghan craft meets contemporary fashion? 🧵

In the dining room at Blickling Estate, contemporary designs by British-Afghan label Avizeh form a special contribution to 'Journeys' as part of the British Fashion Council's national exhibition, 'Fashion Britain'.

Featuring Golden Charma Dozi embroidery, hand-sewn sequins created with refugee women artisans, and references to textile traditions from across Afghanistan, these striking garments explore how craft knowledge travels across borders and generations while remaining rooted in cultural memory and tradition.

Visit 'Journeys - Global Textiles from the Karun Thakar Collection' in the House until 1 November, 11am to 4pm (11am to 3pm from 26 October), last entry 30 minutes before closing.

On World Letter Writing Day, we're celebrating the power of handwritten notes. ✍️📝

At the RAF Oulton Museum, visitors can read original letters sent home by aircrew stationed here during the Second World War. Among them are letters from Warrant Officer Maurice Charles White to his wife, Doreen, discovered in 2004 after her passing. These personal and deeply moving notes capture the realities of wartime separation from his wide and their two sons, offering a poignant glimpse into the love, hope and longing that sustained families through the conflict.

One says: “Well old dearest it’s only 25 days now before I see you again darling, won’t that be grand sweetheart”. In another, returning from leave, he speaks of his children with tender affection. “Give them a kiss for me dearest. By the way, sweet, did they miss me at all? I think Jeff did a little as he didn’t want me to go away.”

More than 80 years later, his words remain a powerful reminder of the enduring value of putting pen to paper. Inspired? Why not sit down and write a letter or card to someone in your thoughts today.

The RAF Oulton Museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, 11am – 3pm.

The garden team have now completed the annual trim of the iconic 400-year-old yew hedges lining the front drive. ✂️

Thankfully, modern hedge cutters and a cherry picker make the task considerably easier than it would have been for the gardeners who cared for these hedges centuries ago, armed only with hand tools and ladders.

With the front hedges now looking neat and tidy, attention has turned to the Parterre topiary. If you're visiting over the next few weeks, keep an eye out for the gardeners at work as they carefully shape and maintain these historic features.

An update on gardening this summer from Head Gardener Ed:

"Finally, a bit of rain! As we are into our third dusty, dry month, the team's priorities have remained focused on one simple goal: keeping as many of our plants alive as possible.

"A huge thank you must go to our volunteers, who have spent countless hours hand-watering plants that, at first glance, may have looked beyond saving. I am confident that many of these plants will come through and thrive once conditions improve.

"The Walled Garden continues to go from strength to strength, with the team harvesting large quantities of beautiful fruit and vegetables. It is a fantastic display of what can be achieved despite the challenging growing conditions."

Look out for produce available to take home from the Donation Station at the Estate Barn. It is through your purchases and support that we are able to continue to care for nature, beauty and history for everyone, for ever.
