✏️ Early Writing Is So Much More Than Putting Pencil to Paper! ✨

Did you know that early writing begins long before children start forming letters and words?
It’s all about building the skills, strength and coordination they need to become confident writers!

Through playful, hands-on experiences, children are developing these important foundations every day at Tiny Acorns.

🎨 Large mark-making: making big movements with arms and shoulders, exploring lines, shapes and patterns.

🧺 Using tweezers: picking up and moving small objects to strengthen little fingers and develop the pincer grip needed for holding a pencil.

🧣 Scarf dancing: waving, swirling and reaching with scarves to develop shoulder stability, arm control and coordination.

🤏 Fine motor activities: threading, pinching, squeezing, twisting and manipulating objects to build finger strength and dexterity.

Every one of these experiences helps children develop the muscles, coordination and control needed for future writing!

🚜🐄 Today, we celebrated Farmer’s Day in our baby room with a farm-themed sensory activity! 🌾💚
We created a tuff tray filled with green gloop, farm animals and scoops for our little ones to explore. The babies enjoyed scooping up the gloop, exploring its texture with their hands and moving the farm animals around the tray. 🐷🐑 They also had lots of fun making animal sounds and copying the sounds modelled by the adults! 🐮🐔 Through this exciting activity, the babies were developing their fine motor skills, exploring different textures and learning about farm animals, while also supporting their communication and language, physical development and understanding the world. 🌱✨

🚀🪐 Space Week! 🌌✨

Today, the babies explored a space-themed sensory activity, investigating shiny metallic resources, including reflective balls, against a sparkly black background. ⚫✨ They also explored play people 👩‍🚀, a sunshine ☀️ and colourful rainbow blocks 🌈.

Through this activity, the babies had opportunities to develop their sensory exploration, hand-eye coordination and physical skills as they reached for, grasped and investigated the different materials.🌟🚀

Today is Heart Day! ❤️ We have been talking about the importance of looking after our hearts and keeping our bodies healthy. We discussed how we can care for our bodies by eating a healthy, balanced diet, enjoying plenty of fruit and vegetables, drinking water, staying active and getting enough rest.

We then decided to explore our healthy foods through still-life drawing! 🎨🍎🥕 We provided the toddlers with a range of colourful fruits and vegetables to observe and draw. The children did so well, taking their time to look carefully at the different shapes, colours and textures.

It was lovely to see their creativity and concentration as they created their own fruit and vegetable masterpieces! 🌈🖍️

Before children can begin writing, they need to develop essential skills such as core strength, shoulder stability, coordination and body awareness!

Here in our Baby Room, we build these important foundations through fun, age-appropriate activities such as scarf dancing, tap-tap sticks, large-scale mark making, finger painting, window washing, water play, crawling, climbing and sensory exploration! 🧽

Through these everyday experiences, our babies are developing the strength, coordination and control they need for future writing skills — all while having fun, exploring and learning through play! 🌟

Every little movement is an important step in their learning journey.

The world is such a fast paced and busy place, especially for little ones. This easy 10 second rule helps give children the time and space to process questions, instructions and conversations before they react.

Some children may need more than 10 seconds and others less. It's never a one size fits all but every child deserves to be met with patience and understanding. 💛
