Happy birthday Amani & Lira! 🎉

Today, is our rescued lionesses Amani & Lira’s 4th birthday. Rescued from war-torn Ukraine in 2025, these girls are celebrating their second birthday here at the Sanctuary & this year we made them a HUGE birthday cake to celebrate… but we’re not quite sure they enjoyed it as much as we hoped. 👀

The progress these girls have made since being rescued is nothing short of incredible and we couldn’t be more proud of them. Days like this where we celebrate our cats are a reminder of why we do the work we do, to provide cats a safe & happy life. 🧡

Join us in wishing Amani & Lira a Happy Birthday 👇

Saying Goodbye to Valentina

It is with great sadness that we announce that Valentina, our much-loved puma, has had to be put to sleep after ongoing health issues led to a decline in her wellbeing.

Born at Salzburg Zoo alongside her twin sister, Viktoria, Valentina moved to The Big Cat Sanctuary in September 2008 when she was just a year old. The sisters spent almost their entire lives together until Viktoria sadly passed away in 2025. Having called the Sanctuary home for nearly 18 years, Valentina was one of our longest-standing residents and was just a month away from her 19th birthday.

Just over a year ago, Valentina began experiencing seizures with no known underlying cause, and medication was introduced as part of her long-term care. Blood tests also revealed advanced kidney disease, a degenerative condition which could be managed but not cured; even so, her medication kept her comfortable and content. Her dedicated keepers watched over her closely throughout, attentive to the smallest change in her behaviour, appetite and routine. Sadly, in recent weeks they began to see what none of them wanted to see, as her condition progressed beyond the point at which medication could provide the support she needed. With no further treatment options available, and following careful discussion with our veterinary team, the hardest decision was made to put her to sleep peacefully, surrounded by the people who had cared for her every day.

Valentina was a wonderful character and an incredible ambassador for her species. We will remember her beautiful face, her inquisitive nature and that unmistakable touch of feistiness that made her so special.

Kuda’s first steps outside in his new home 🏡🐾

A few weeks ago we completed the build of the Rusty-Spotted Cat Conservation Centre and moved Kuda into his brand new home. Complete with three outdoor areas, two off show dens and one on show den, this is the UK’s largest enclosure for the world’s smallest wild cat. 👀

Since moving into his new enclosure we have slowly introduced Kuda into his new home. The first step was him getting used to his off show den, then into his on show, and now he is exploring his outside areas. Monitored by keepers, Kuda is making progress everyday, from being slightly cautious to exploring around & climbing up his beams. 🤩

Stay tuned as give more updates on Kuda and his next steps in the Rusty-Spotted Cat Conservation Centre!

Feeding time for our white lioness pride! 🤩

Did you know we don’t feed our lions every single day? This is because they are gorge feeders. In the wild, lions will go days without a successful hunt, this means they will typically gorge on one meal to satisfy them for a few days until their next hunt! 👀

Watch til the end to see our girls in action! ⚡️

Have you ever heard a lion roar up close? 🗣️🦁

A lion's roar can reach up to 114 decibels, as loud as a chainsaw or a rock concert, and travels up to 5 miles across open plains. Lions have square, flat vocal folds instead of triangular ones, letting air pass smoothly to create that deep, booming sound without wasting energy. ⚡️

Lions are typically seen roaring at dusk and dawn mainly because of atmospheric conditions, not just habit. It is theorised that this is because the air is cooler and stiller than during the heat of the day. This matters because sound travels more efficiently through cool, calm air, and there's less turbulence to scatter or weaken the sound waves.
