🌍 World Food Safety Week🌍

As we mark World Milk Day - 1st June and World Cheese Day 4 June, Ashford Port Health recognises the vital role the dairy industry plays in food production, nutrition and supporting farming communities across the world.

These awareness days also provide an opportunity to highlight the important bio-security and food safety work carried out at UK Border Control Posts, helping to protect the British dairy sector and public health from animal diseases and microbiological risks circulating internationally.

Our Senior Vet, Daniel Acalinei explains the importance of the checks that are carried out.

Recent outbreaks of Lumpy Skin Disease (L*D) in parts of Europe reinforce the importance of robust import controls and veterinary checks. While L*D does not pose a risk to human health, it can have serious impacts on animal welfare, milk production and trade.

At Sevington Border Control Post, Ashford Port Health’s Official Veterinarians and technical teams carry out comprehensive checks on imported dairy consignments. This includes identifying restricted commodities and ensuring products meet the required safety and processing standards before entering Great Britain.

We also support national monitoring programmes, sampling higher-risk dairy products for hazards such as Listeria monocytogenes, helping ensure food placed on the UK market meets strict safety standards.

This work forms a key part of the UK’s front line bio-security system—protecting farmers, livestock, consumers and public health.

A huge thank you to all veterinary, technical and operational colleagues across Border Control Posts, laboratories and the wider food industry for the vital role you play every day.

Since our last update, Ashford Port Health has safely removed a total of 226,000 kilos of product deemed unfit for human consumption. since November 2024.

That’s the equivalent of 38 elephants. 🐘

At Ashford Port Health we are immensely proud of our team.

Daily they play a vital part in ensuring that food entering GB is fit for human consumption.

Since 2021, Over 100 staff have benefited from training, including part time remote courses with the University of Birmingham, University of Derby and Middlesex University

To date 34 students have completed the MSc in Environmental Health. 46 students have completed the Higher Certificate in Food Control at University of Birmingham. A further 20 students have benefited from practical experience allowing them to meet professional competency requirements for the The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health.

Two of our students have also been recipients of the prestigious John Craig Students Award.

Ongoing staff training is critical to our work, ensuring our teams have the knowledge and skills needed to protect public and animal health effectively.
